Darren squinted up at the bright sun as he brushed back his ebony bangs. He continued pushing his wooden cart down the busy markets of Appledura. Appledura was a beautiful country with trees that touched the sky and beautiful crystal blue streams. The skies were always clear and birds sang thier sweet love songs in the crisp morning air, brightening everybody's spirits. But there was a dark side to Appledura. For the king of this land was a fierce ruler who did as he pleased and kept the villagers living in fear.
Darren had finished his work early that day and was hurrying home to surprise his wife Colby. They were both very much in love and had been married for less than a month. He smiled to himself when he saw his wife working away in their tiny kitchen preparing dinner. Then Colby looked up from her preparations glancing out the window. When she spotted him hurrying up the path she rushed out of their tiny home to greet him. Her sun-kissed skin and blonde hair were total contrasts to Darren's ivory skin and raven locks.
"Hello, husband!" she greeted cheerfully, her apron flowing in the slight breeze.
"Hello, dear wife," he smiled ant got go of his cart to take her in his arms. He kissed her lovingly and then released her re-taking the cart into his arms. "What is for supper?" He asked smelling the delicious scent coming from inside their cottage.
"Aww, not much I am afraid. Chicken broth and potatoes." She frowned thinking he would be disappointed, "But I did manage to get some fresh bread at the market-place today," she added, " I hope you are not too disappointed." Darren smiled at this.
"Oh my silly wife, how can I be disappointed when I have this beautiful face to look into?" he stroked her cheek lovingly.
"Oh Darren, you are such a romantic," Colby giggled as she turned to head back into the house.
"Aye, but you love me for it!" He called after her. Just then Darren and Colby were stopped in their tracks by the sound of a trumpet blazing, signaling that the king's troops were approaching. Darren quickly gestured for Colby to go inside, she complied, a look of terror on her face at what the troops might want. Darren got down on one knee just as the white stallions carrying the kings crest, skidded to a halt innt ont of him. Darren was sure to keep his eyes focused on the ground when The General jumped off his horse.
"Get up." He commanded, his voice thick with cruelty. Darren did as he was told careful to keep his eyes on his feet. "His Majesty King Daniel the second requires new laborers to aid him in his castle." The General reported, "you will come with us." Darren gasped, he knew that it was rare but once you were sent to the King's castle, you would not return. His mind raced with ways to persuade them to leave him be.
"B-but I am not built well for labor, surely you would be able to find someone better suited than I," he pleaded.
"Aww `tis true you have not much muscle, but you have..." he paused for a moment to look Darren up and down, causing him to shiver, "*other* qualities his majesty is interested in," The General smirked. "Take him." He commanded. The soldiers moved in on a now terrified Darren.
"No, wait! Please! What about my wife?" he begged. "Surely you will not take away her husband? Who will provide for her?" At this The General threw down a small bag of gold. It hit the earth with a harsh jangling sound.
"This is plenty to take care of your woman. Now, you will come with us willingly, or we will take you by force. It is your choice." Darren gulped fighting to hold back the tears that were welling up in his eyes. He slowly and bravely looked The General in his eyes, his cold glittering green eyes. Eyes that could break the bravest of men just by staring at them.
"I will not go willingly." The General smiled maliciously at this.
" I had hoped you would say that." And before Darren could do or say anything more, the general had raised the blunt end of his sword and struck Darren over the head, causing him to black out. He then bent down and picked up Darrens limp body with ease. He slung the unconscious form over his horse, mounted, and rode off in a cloud of dust. Terrified, Colby watched from the small window in their kitchen. As soon as they rode ofhe dhe dashed outside to where Darren had been standing just moments before. She stood shaking for a moment before she collapsed onto the damp earth in a fit of tears, rocking back and forth on the ground. The small bag of gold lay forgotten as she mourned the loss of her husband.
