Prologue
2, 5, 18, 33, 34, 39. Those were my lucky numbers. Jeff was lying on the couch reading Sports Illustrated while I checked the numbers on my lottery ticket. I didn't usually play, but the jackpot had been growing bigger and bigger for the past month and this week it was up to $42 million. So I took $10, that we didn't really have and bought some tickets.
Jeff had been pissed off. "Sabrina, you know how broke we are. How could you be dumb enough to just throw that money away?"
Even though he talked to me like a piece of crap, I stood up to him. "You'll kick yourself in the ass if we win Jeff." I had told him.
"Our odds have to be 5 billion: 1. I doubt we will even win back our 10 bucks."
In truth we really couldn't afford it. Jeff had a well paying job as a mechanic and I had started a job as a legal secretary, but we had so many student loans to pay back, heaped on top of all the other monthly bills. We barely had enough money left over for food. The one luxury we both agreed on was a computer and internet service. We were still paying off the credit card bill.
So here I was checking my ticket, I was on the second to last ticket when I realized that all the numbers matched. "OH MY GOD!" I shouted. I was usually loud and boisterous, so Jeff didn't even look at me when I shouted. "Jeff, we won. Oh my god I think we won." With that he jumped up and ran over to see. He checked the ticket too. With tears in his eyes he hugged me. We had won. We hid the ticket in the freezer between some ground beef and some chicken, that night. Neither of us could sleep and we stayed up all night making plans. Our dreams were going to come true.
