Rescue Me
Prologue: I wrote this story based entirely on the song 'Rescue Me'...and what I feel when I hear it. If you read this entire story. Go listen to the song, and please...come back and tell me if you can hear this story in it. If you can see it. Kay? Thanks!
A huge Victorian style home sat in the middle of a 10 acre field. Painted a very light ivy green color, with white molding around the windows, and beautiful fan like brackets around the front wrap around porch. The home appeared to be in great shape despite the fact that it had been neglected for several years. A silver bug drove up the dusty dirt road, that lead through the thick wooded area that surrounded the home, and it's large field. It pulled up in front of the house, and parked in front, just a few feet from the front steps. A young woman opened the front door and stepped out. She sighed happily, straighten her white cardigan, and pulling the front of her light colored vintage style dress. She closed the car door, and stood next to the car staring at the huge house. Her red hair was cut short, and layered in the back, with a long bang, and much longer side pieces, that was curled in large vintage curls around her face today to match her look.
She sighed rolling her eyes as she beat on the roof of the of the car, "Are you coming out, or are you just going to sit in there all day? Come on Arianna!"
"I'm coming. I'm coming," she pulled herself out of the car, and slammed the door behind her, "Geez Ella you're so impatient." Arianna sighed loudly at Ella's annoying chipper behavior. She tossed her very long brown hair back with a flick of her head. She was dressed in an old band t-shirt, and a simple pair of skinny black jeans.
"Am not!" Ella scoffed at the idea. She pulled a few boxes from the trunk and placed them on the ground at her feet. "Take these two in, and I'll be in soon. The door's unlock."
Ella's friend did as she was told, dropping the boxes on the floor in the entry way. Ella soon followed, gently placing her things on the floor next to the others, "See that...is why I don't trust you with breakables."
"Sorry," She rolled her eyes and smirked chomping on her mouth full of gum. She walked over to the couch and plopped herself, "Did you want me to spend the night here with you?"
"No, I think I'm okay here by myself," Ella walked to the couch lifting Arianna's feet up. She sat down on the couch where her feet once were, and let them drop in her lap, "Besides...I'll never get anything done with you around." She playfully poked at Arianna's legs.
"True, "She smirked, "But aren't you a little scared this big old house is haunted?"
Ella laughed out loud, "I practically grew up here. I know it's not haunted at all. Not unless it's haunted by my grandma, and she gave me this place when she died, so I'm okay with a grandma roommate."
"That...is just creepy." Arianna raised her brow at Ella.
Ella laughed again, "Yeah, maybe so, but I think I'll be fine on my own. I have to get used to it anyway."
"Okay, whatever you say." Arianna looked at her watch and gave a short sigh, "It's at least a 45 minute drive home from here. Why'd you have to move so far away?"
"Oh hush, and get out of her," She playfully pushed Arianna's legs off her lap.
Arianna stood to her feet and headed for the front door, "I guess I should start that long drive home then. See you later." She said, "And if Casper shows up...I better be the first call you make, because I got to see that!" She laughed.
Ella laughed as well, "Deal. I'll talk to you soon." Ella saw her friend off , and quickly got to work getting her things together.
The following morning Ella got up and unpacked a few of her boxes. Placing them neatly among the things her grandmother had left her. Making the place her own was proving more difficult then she'd hoped.
Ella sat at her kitchen table. Enjoying the sent of her fresh cup of coffee, she had clutched in both hand o the table top. She sighed contently, looking to the window. The sun casting a bright light on the floor right next to her. The bird song filled the fresh spring air. It was perfect. Just has she'd remembered every morning to be with her grandmother. She could almost smell the fresh eggs on the stove, and hear the happy humming in the distance.
She ran her fingers over an envelop she had placed in front of her on the kitchen table. She softly sighed picking it up in her fingers. She pulled open the flap, and closed her eyes tightly to stop the tears from pouring from her eyes already. She pulled the first piece of paper that her fingers could find in the envelope. It was a hand written letter from her grandmother. The envelope was left to Ella at the reading of her will, but Ella couldn't bare to open it until now. She opened her eyes and began to read.
My Dearest Ella,
You are my angel on earth. With the gifts I've left you I hope to give you the heaven you deserve. May you chase all your dreams, and find truth in happiness.
I love you,
Nana
Ella's tearful eyes spilled over a river of tears on the small piece of paper. She reached in the envelope again and felt one last piece of paper. She pulled it out, and unfolded it. It was what appeared to be a map of the property. She looked it over and pointed out what she knew was there. The fallen barn was there, and there's the house. Off into the wooded area behind the house was a structure she was unfamiliar to her. She stared at it for the longest time trying to recall any memory of it. "What is that?" She said out loud as if the thought it would answer her.
She picked herself up, taking her cup of coffee with her, and walked out the back door. She walked along the path leading through her rather large backyard, up until she reached the edge of the woods. She stopped in front of the thick trees, and sighed. Taking a deep breath, she mustered up the curage, to walk straight back through the woods as quickly as her feet could carry her. It didn't take her long to discover the structure pictured in the map. It was a greenhouse of some sort. A very un-kept, and over grown garden shown through the foggy glass. She pushed random vines away from the glass door, and pushed it open to get a better look at what she'd been missing for so long.
"Wow," She uttered to herself at what she'd uncovered. In front of her shown, and small, circular path around what appeared to be a fish pond. A small rock fountain on one side of the pond didn't seem to work anymore, and the fish appear to have died. She pulled herself through the overgrown weeds, and stepped on the path. From the inside she could see the beautiful blue roses trying to force their way through all the weeds. "This must have been so beautiful." She said to herself.
She walked around the circular path looking at all the half dead rose bushes, trying to find a way to later save them, when she noticed unusually bright colored vines along the garden floor. The vines where a very beautiful blue green color, and despite the beauty of the vines alone, they seemed dried out, and frail. Ella knew whatever it was, was something worth saving.
Throughout the following weeks Ella spent a good portion of her time after work fixing the greenhouse back to it's original glory. She did the best she could, and was quite proud with the results.
