Of Bert and Gumdrops
Gerard smiled when he looked at the picture text he had just received. It was a picture of Bert who had dyed his hair blonde, now eerily resembling Kurt Cobain, pointing a water gun at a picture of Courtney Love.
It had been almost a year since the two rockers had broken up for the second time and they were becoming closer by the week. They had both agreed not to go overboard on the phone calls but to keep them at a respectable 2-3 a week just for the mere fact that if they called each other every day it would seem more like a relationship than a friendship, and with limited contact it was always a joy to be able to talk to each other again. Each phone called was filled with updates on each other’s tours and stories from the years they had both missed in each other’s lives. Each phone call ended with an “I like you very much Gerard” from Bert and a giggle from Gerard before he said “I like you very much too Bert”.
Gerard closed his phone before heading to the front of the bus to join the rest of his band and enjoy a night off. My Chemical Romance was doing the Projekt Revolution tour and were thoroughly enjoying the new crop of fans they were gaining but were also very tired from all the shows. The crowd gave such amazing energy that while it was completely enthralling and wonderful, it was completely exhausting. The guys were planning to spend the night watching one of the greatest movies of all time, “To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar”. It’s about three drag queens who drive across the country for a drag contest and get stuck in the middle of Nebraska when their car breaks down.
After the movie and stuffing their faces with chips and pop corn, Gerard decided it was time to head to bed so he could give a great show tomorrow. “Goodnight guys, I’m pooped,” Gerard said as he stood up from the couch and walked towards the bunkrooms. He made it 3 steps before he was pelted with pillows and popcorn while the guys yelled “GEEZER!” “OLD MAN!” and their personal favorite “WASHED UP ROCK STAR!!” Ever since Gerard turned 30 in April, every time he went to bed before anyone else they would taunt him for being old. Gerard smiled before shouting back, “AT LEAST I’M PRETTY!”
“Low blow man, low blow.” Ray said before Gerard shut the door to the bunkroom laughing to himself. He quickly pulled out his phone again to look at the picture Bert had sent him. It was odd to see him with blonde hair but he did look good with those glasses. The past year had been so good for both men. MCR’s CD debuted at number 2 in America only because Disney had put out the Hannah Montana CD the same week; otherwise it would have been number 1. The Used had put out an amazing new album and was gaining a lot of support for it as well. The two had also grown close again. Their weekly phone calls gave them a chance to work through the past and helped them move on to the future. Bert had stopped commenting on MCR and Gerard in interviews and Gerard was finally learning to let go of the past and see Bert as who he was today and not just as a former lover who had done him wrong.
Gerard looked at Bert’s picture one more time before smiling and crawling into his bunk, falling into a deep restful sleep. He dreams were filled with Bert and tasty gumdrops; he was finally happy again.
