Ch 10

You'd be suprised how calm you become when you're standing in the dark, waiting for for the inevitable. He wasn't going to kill me, this I knew. But I also knew there were worse things than death. But I was beyond reacting now. The darkness pressed down all around me, like a blanket. It was more suffocating than comforting. I had my back turned to the door, but could see the light flood in for a split-second while he entered. I didn't move. Everything was silent in the dark, except for the sound of my breathing and the pounding of my blood in my ears.
I felt his cold hands on my hips, like stone clamps, spinning my around so I was facing him. I heard him growl lowly as he knocked my backwards into a shelf, knocking my head against something metal. I bit my tongue and tasted blood. I opened my mouth to cry out in pain and he stiffened. My blood. He could smell it. I spit into the darkness, hoping that I hit my target.
He cussed under his breath and ripped open the door, leaving me temporarily blinded while he took off. I was frozen for a moment before giggling hysterically while I slid to the floor, realizing how close to death I had just come. He had to leave because he couldn't resist my blood. He couldn't kill me, so he had to leave. I laughed until my sides hurt and tears streamed from my eyes. I remained like that, laughing, until one of the janitors found me and took me to the nurse.

I sobered up once I was sent home. They thought the heat had made me a little loopy and I agreed whole-heartedly. My mother sat next to me on the couch while I flipped through stations on the tv. Gerard's face flashed in front of my eyes with every click. I glanced at my mother and knew that I needed to talk to Gerard. Mikey was probably plotting my mother's death as we sat here together on the couch, her white-blond hair reminding me of my own. But how could I talk to him after what I did? I doubt he ever wanted to see me again. I knew there was only one option.
"Mom, I need to run to the store. Do you need anything?"
She looked at me and said "Are you sure you feel up to going out? I can run out if you need me to..."
"No Mom, it's alright..." I stood up and fished my keys from my purse. As I walked to the door I paused and called over my shoulder "You should stay inside until I'm back. Don't answer the door."
I looked over my shoulder at her, hoping my expression conveyed that I meant it. She looked at me like I really was loopy from the heat. I shook my head and closed the door behind me.

It took me awhile to find his house. I hadn't been paying much attention when he took me to it last time. Once I found it however, I knew it was the right one. I sat in my car in the driveway for a minute, looking for any signs of life. The house was completely dormant. I decided I had to act, and got out of the death trap to approach the door.
I considered ringing the bell, but then decided against it. I needed to run into Gerard before anyone else. With a deep breath I pushed open the door.

Everything was silent inside. The thought that he might not be there made bile rise in the back of my throat. I looked around desperately, trying to decide where to look first. I knew I didn't have much time, so I tore down the closest hallway. It didn't take long for me to become hopelessly lost in the labyrinth of doors and halls. I was paniced now, having no clue how long I had been running down corridors and banging into walls. I spun in circles, trying to find something that looked familiar.
I screamed bloody murder as a door behind me banged open. I spun around and felt my heart swell as I stared at a shocked Gerard. I took in the blood trickling down his chin and flung myself into his arms.
"Did he hurt you?! Did he?!" I was beyond hysterical.
Gerard ran a comforting hand through my hair. "What? No. I've just been... drinking." He looked away embarassedly. "Who is he?" He turned to me sharply, wiping the blood onto the back of his hand.
"Mikey." I whispered. "Where is Mikey?"
"He left a little while ago. Why?"
