Chapter 101

++++++++++

"She's allergic to "I love you's"

And staying in one place for too long.

If you blink, she's gone."

"Hey," Kelly smiled as she answered her phone.

"So what are you doing for lunch?" Carrie asked.

"I can't. I promised Jill and Kate I'd go with them."

"That's ok, what about after?"

"I have a photo shoot for a magazine."

"Bummer," Carrie frowned.

"But, um, hey, I needed to talk to you about something, so I'm glad you called."

"Yea?" Carrie smiled.

"Actually, never mind, I should probably do this in person."

"Oh...ok."

"How about after the photo shoot? Your place?"

"Sounds good."

"Ok, cool. See you then."

"Looks like it."

"What's up with the thinking face?" Kate asked in Kelly's ear from behind her, causing her to jump in her chair.

"Shoot," Kelly laughed, standing to hug both of her back up singers. "You scared me."

"Well, you were seriously out of it," Kate smiled.

"Yea, we were trying to follow you line of vision to see if there was some hot guy or something, but all we saw is that old grandma, so we were seriously hoping that wasn't it," Jill laughed.

"What?" Kelly asked, turning to the grandma in question. "She's totally hot."

"Ok, gross, she's like eighty," Kate made a face as they sat down.

"I hate old people smell," Jill frowned.

Kelly giggled, "So, what's up y'all?"

"Nothing much."

"Yea, just working on a couple new songs."

"Oo, y'all have any demos?" Kelly asked.

Kate laughed, shaking her head as she dug in her purse, pulling out a mixed CD, "I swear, you're like our biggest fan or something."

"Y'all make good music," she shrugged with a smile, putting the CD in her purse. "Oh, so guess what?"

"What?" Jill asked.

"France."

"That's more of a where, isn't it?" Jill laughed.

"Whatever. Last two weeks of June. You guys in?"

"Heck yea," Kate smiled, reaching over the table and high-fiving her.

"Now I'm excited," Jill grinned. "I didn't think we'd be able to go before the promo stuff."

"Yea, Jay worked really hard with Narvel to be able to pull this off," Kelly explained.

"Thank you Jason."

"So what was going on with the thinking?" Kate asked curiously.

"You're not one to drop things, huh?" Kelly smiled.

"That's your fault," Jill replied. "She was never like that until y'all started hanging out."

"I've learned from the best," Kate shrugged. "So what's up KC?"

"Nothing, really, just some stuff."

"Love life?"

Kelly sighed, "Kinda."

"Is it serious?"

"It's trying to be."

"And you don't want that?" Kate asked curiously.

"I'm not sure."

"And what do they want?"

Kelly looked up, studying her. This was probably what made her become such good friends with her backup singer. She had to be one of the most tuned-in people she knew, but was sweet enough never to push it, like the fact that she hadn't once asked for a name of the person. "They want to make it official."

"As in, you be their girlfriend official? Or taking the next step official?"

"Girlfriend," Kelly blushed slightly.

"Already took the next step," Kate nodded. "Hmm..."

"What?"

"Well, it's just not like you to just be with someone like that. I mean, I know how you are. This person must be pretty special in order for you to sleep with them, whether you realize it or not."

Kelly nodded.

"Just don't pass up on a good thing because you're scared, alright?"

"I'm not scared."

Kate raised an eyebrow.

"I'm not," she insisted.

"Whatever you say..." Kate replied, smiling as the waiter came to take their orders.

"Well here I go again:

Im sinking in my faithlessness and fear,

Everythings fine,

Everythings okay,

Everybody loves a fool,

Everybody walks away."

"Watcha got?" Ashley asked as she curled Kelly's hair for the photo shoot.

"Carrie," Kelly replied, texting the country singer back, letting her know about what time the photo shoot would be over.

"Kelly..."

"Ashley..." she mocked with a grin.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yea, of course."

Ashley set down the curling iron, pulling up another chair, turning Kelly's so that they were facing each other, "Now, this may be a totally stupid and hilarious question, and if it is, that's fine, we'll laugh it off, no big deal."

"Ok?"

"The cowgirl..." she began carefully.

"Carrie?" Kelly asked curiously. "Yea, what about her?"

"Kelly, now you know that I don't have a problem at all with stuff like this. I mean we lived long enough in L.A. to not be in small town southern culture shock anymore."

"Ash, what's up?"

"Are you sleeping with her?"

Kelly froze as she stared back at her best friend who was studying her closely.

"Kelly, like I said, I absolutely promise you that I don't have a problem with it at all, I just want to know the truth, you know? I think as your best friend, I should get at least that."

Kelly swallowed hard, "Y-yes."

Ashley nodded, patting the shorter girls knee comfortingly, "You ok?"

Kelly bit her lip nervously, looking down at her hands that were clasped in her lap, "Are you?"

"Kelly, I said I'm fine with it," Ashley reminded with a smile. "As your best friend, I do feel the need to look out for you, though, so I wanna know...is this just physical or what?"

"I-I don't know anymore," Kelly replied. "I mean, that's how it started out, you know? Just physical. But now..."

"But now?" Ashley urged gently.

"I really, really like her Ash," Kelly admitted, looking up at her with tears in her eyes. "And I don't know what to do."

"Shh, sweetie, it's ok," Ashley assured her as she stood, wiping the tears from the singer's cheeks.

"No, it's not," she argued as she cried harder. "I really like her a lot, and that scares the crap out of me. And I mean, it's not just the fact of what this is going to do to us and our families and our fans, but she could really hurt me, and I don't want to have to go through that again."

"It's going to be ok," Ashley repeated, pulling her up onto her feet and into a hug. "Everything's going to be fine," she promised as Kelly held on to her tightly, burying her face in her shoulder.
