Ch 11

I explained as much as I could to him in the car, sweat forming on my forehead while he drove dangerously fast. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" he growled, nearly taking out a streetlight.
"I told you why." I said feebly, lacing my fingers in his cold free hand. His lips were pressed thin and I knew he was much more aware of what Mikey was capable of than I. "Why is he doing this?" I asked, leaning my head against the window.
"He didn't like the idea of me hanging out with a human... he thought I should change you."
My breathing stopped as I looked at him from the corner of my eye. Was that what Mikey had been trying to do in the janitors closet? Me, be a vampire? I could spend forever with Gerard. Why did the thought make fireworks go off in my chest?
"I told him no way in hell." He said flatly.
My heart shattered for the 100th time that week. He didn't want to spend forever with me. He seemed to notice my reaction, because he sighed.
"It's not that I don't want. Nothing would make me happier. But that's just it. It'd make me happy, but I can't sentence you to the life of a vampire."
I wanted to scream at him that he was going to let me grow old and die, but I was too worried about my mother. We reached my house and he swore violently.
"He's here. I can smell him."
I groaned and got out of the car, trotting after Gerard while he stormed through the front door. I choked back a scream as I saw our living room in ruins. Gerard stood frozen at the foot of the stairs. He took a deep breath and sighed. "What do you want Mikey?"
I looked around, but couldn't see Mikey. Suddenly I heard laughter as he appeared at the top of the stairs, blood on his hands. I opened my mouth to scream but no sound came out. It was like I was under water. I stumbled backwards into a wall, leaned over, and was violently sick on the carpet. When I stood back up I saw Gerard looking at me, his expression unreadable.
"She's not dead." Mikey said indifferently from the top of the stairs. "This," he stated, gesturing to his hands, "This is nothing. Just wait." Before I realized what was happening, Gerard and Mikey were together, halfway up the steps, and struggling against each other. I watched as blow after blow landed, unable to look away. A little flicker of hope rose in my chest when I noted that Gerard seemed to have the upper hand. With a back breaking thud, Gerard slammed Mikey to the bottom of the stairs, leaving Mikey bleeding from the mouth and looking up at him with a grin.
"Alright, fair enough. I'll go. But you know what this means."
And with that Mikey stood up and left, limping slightly out of my front door. I looked at Gerard, desperate for answers.
"Your mom isn't here." was all he said.
My mouth dropped open as he gestured to the driveway. Her car wasn't here. She hadn't been home. A flood of relief brought me to my knees as I realized she was safe. But he had let Mikey go. Of course he had, he was his brother. Why was I expecting him to kill him? Probably because he wanted to kill my mother. Mikey's last words resurfaced in my mind.
"What does this mean?" I asked, looking over at Gerard. He appeared distraught.
"It means we need to talk."
