Chapter 12
The doors were locked. Every entrance they tried was locked up tight.
"We are fucked." Brad said, panting from exertion of running and yanking on doors.
"It'll be okay, there are tons of cars in the parking lot, maybe we can take one of those." Renee said, she was worried about Grace, she was old and they constantly been running or walking very quickly, Renee was terrified her grandma would have a heart attack. She was currently being held up by Rob and Renee, leaving Pompey to deal with a near hysterical Josie and Brad and Brody keeping watch for anymore zombies.
"You know how to hot wire one? Because I doubt there will be keys just sitting there waiting for us." Brad remarked. Renee shot him an annoyed look but she couldn't argue with his question, she didn't know how to start a car without the keys and no one else was piping up either.
"Let's break a window." Rob suggested, pointing to the airport building covered with glass windows.
"Most likely that bulletproof stuff that we can't just smash with a rock. Besides we don't want to leave a big open window to let those things in after us." Brody said out loud.
"Maybe we could just shoot a lock off a door like in the movies." Rob suggested. "And barricade the door somehow?" No one had any better ideas so the decided to look for a side entrance with a single door, rather then one of the public entrances. On the far side of the building the located one, it had the words "BOILER ROOM" painted on it in neat white block letters. Everyone but Brody stood on the far side of the building, in case the bullet missed and ricocheted toward them. Brody sent a silent plea to God that this would work and that they could all be safe as he pointed the trigger and squeezed. He watched a hole about the size of a grapefruit open up where the lock and door knob had been.
"Let's go, we're in." He told Renee who peeked out from around the corner and the group followed her back to Brody. Brody went in first, the room was dark with only the light coming in from the door and orange emergency lights on the ceiling, which didn't really provide any source for light once the door was closed. The room was surprisingly silent, which meant the furnace wasn't turned on.
"There's got to be a light switch somewhere." Pompey said looking at the wall beside the door.
"It's probably on the wall leading into the main building." Renee offered.
"How big do you think this room is?" Rob asked, "And what are we going to do to lock this door?"
"Ok. Brad stays here at this door, keep it shut and if anything tries to get in, kill it. Rob once we get to the inner door, you stay there, you should be able to keep in voice contact with Brad and if anything happens, he can run toward your voice. Josie stays with Rob and Grace at the inner door, Renee, Pompey and I will look around inside and see if we can find something to use to block the door. Maybe a maintenance room with a hammer or something. Everyone gets a gun, including Grace and Josie. From this point on, everyone stays armed." Brody instructed.
"I've never held a gun." Josie told them.
"Just keep the safety off and be sure you want to kill whatever is coming at you." Brody said handing her one of his hand guns. Brad, stood and watched them start making their way down the walkway, hopefully leading them to safety. He could hear their voices even though they were speaking at normal levels and he felt relieved knowing that he wasn't really alone.
Luck for once was on their side, The door was almost exactly opposite the outer door, and it was locked from their side. Brody laid his ear against the door and listened for any noises. When he was satisfied that it was safe, he opened the door slightly and looked out and breathes a sigh of relief, it looked safe, no people were moving around and better yet, no zombies. He opened the door the rest of the way and looked at Pompey and Renee.
"Let's go. Rob, if brad has any problems you get everyone in on this side of the door, lock it from your side and shut the door, those things stumble around, let's hope they don't have the motor skills to unlock a door."
Rob took Renee's hand before she passed him and stopped her for a moment. "Be safe." He whispered.
"You too." She replied before following Brody out into the hallway.
"I'm supposed to keep you safe." Pompey said to Rob.
"We all have to look out for each other now." Rob replied bravely, even though he was terrified. He didn't think he had what it was going to take to survive and he could hear an inner voice telling him that he would get them all killed.
"See you soon." Rob stepped out into the hall and watched them walk away down the corridor.
