Part 13

Danny:

We arrived at the hotel that we were going to be staying in at around ten o’clock. We’d all decided it was best for us all to have some space tonight after everything that had gone off this morning. Sam & James weren’t talking to each other which made everything awkward for the rest of us. Cam had no idea what was going on between them, but he had better sense than to ask. Sam was confused and angry at James for dropping this “news” on him - well, that’s what he’d told me, anyway. I have a feeling that James may have told Ben, but we haven’t really had chance to talk properly, so I wasn’t too sure.

We would’ve usually stayed in a “penthouse room” but, because of the circumstances, we all had separate rooms – which I was quite disappointed about. I wouldn’t have minded sharing a room with Ben. As soon as we got up to our rooms, Sam went straight into his room without saying a word to anyone and slammed the door shut. I glanced awkwardly at James, who was staring at the closed door. He noticed me looking at him and turned to enter his own room, muttering “Goodnight,” to us.

Cam turned to me and Ben.

“Look, I don’t know what’s going on with those two, but – whatever it is – I hope to God that you guys can get ‘em through it; ‘cause I can’t handle this awkwardness for much longer.” He opened his door and chucked his bag inside the room. “I’m gonna get a shower then head out and get pissed and laid. You guys wanna join me?”

I shook my head. “No thanks, Cam. I’d rather just chill here for tonight.” Cam nodded and he turned to Ben.

“I suppose you’re going to say “No”, too, am I right?” Ben chuckled and nodded. “Well then, just don’t fuck too loud, ‘cause I don’t wanna hear it." I felt my face turn bright red.

“You’re going out, anyway, so you wouldn’t hear a thing,” Ben said with a wink. Cam shrugged and entered his room, leaving me and Ben alone in the hotel corridor.

There was an awkward silence for a while before Ben spoke. “Do you know?” I didn’t have to ask about what, I already knew the answer. I nodded. “I thought so.” Another awkward silence followed. “How did it go with Myca?”

“She didn’t take it too well. What about Sam?” Ben shook his head.

“She flipped out when I told her that the other person was a guy,” He said.

“You didn’t tell her that that guy is me?” He shook his head again. I sighed with relief. “Good, ‘cause I didn’t tell Myca that the guy I left her for is you.” Ben smiled at me and then looked down at the door key in his hand. We stood there for a while, not making eye contact and fiddling with our keys. Why was this so awkward?

“Well, they’ll find out later on,” he said and opened the door to his room. “G’night.” He entered his room and closed the door.

I stood in the corridor, staring into space until I heard some people talking as they exited the elevator. I inserted the key into my own door and entered the room. I didn’t bother turning the lights on as I made my way blindly to the double bed, strip off my jeans and jacket so that I was left in my boxers and t-shirt and climb under the covers. I closed my eyes and slowly drifted to sleep with Ben’s face in my mind.
