The Perfect Guy
Chapter 15
She grabbed her bag up and turned back to him.
“Thanks again” she said with that smile that made his heart skip
“Anytime” he said and brushed her hair out of her eyes. Anyone driving by might have the impression of a man telling his wife goodbye as she made her way on business. If someone could have seen their wordless exchange he knew they would have seen the love between them so why couldn’t they? Why wouldn’t they just say what was right there?
“Jordan” she said emotionally and he watched her blink away tears
“What” he grinned trying to ease her mind
“I shouldn’t have done that last night” she said as the tears slid down her face
“Shhh” he said and pulled her into him “Look I know it was wrong too but we both needed it” he said as he wiped her tears off her cheeks gently with his thumbs.
“Needed it?” she asked with a curious look
He choked back his own emotion. He saw the blinding opportunity to tell her everything. How he felt about her, how he didn’t care about anything else but being with her. She looked at him with those expectant blue green eyes and he sighed.
“Yeah we needed someone at that moment and well” he shrugged “we were there” he said quietly and kissed her forehead. His moment of confession was gone and he felt the fleeting chance to keep her slip away.
She let him hold her and he could tell that she wanted him to go on, to continue into the reasons why they had needed someone, but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. He knew he was a coward but he couldn’t chance loosing what little they had together. What if he was wrong? What if she was just using him? The questions plagued him continuously and without answers he couldn’t give into chance. He didn’t want her to go. He wanted to just stay here and lock themselves away from everything and every body, for every night of the rest of his life to be like the last. She sighed deeply against him and he could only hold onto the hope that she was having the same struggle as he was.
“well I better get on the road” she said pushing back away from him.
“yeah, please be careful and we will send you your ticket for New York in the next couple of days.”
“I have a lot of work to do” she said starting to perk up with expectancy of the unknown challenges
“I guess so, we expect a sell out” he said with a laugh as she stiffened and terror flashed in her eyes “just kidding, just kidding” he said grabbing her hand. He almost couldn’t stand the thought of loosing contact with her.
“Jordan” she blurted out and he found himself tense as if she was about to confess her feelings to him. He waited his heart racing. He looked into her eyes and saw it. He saw what he felt and his mind kicked into over drive. Was this it? Was she going to be the brave one and bring what they both felt out into the open?
She held his gaze and said nothing. He didn’t think his straining heart could take more of her silent stare into his open soul.
“Yeah” he tried to say with a steady light voice
She hung her head as if she lost her bravery as quickly as he did.
“I am going to miss you” she said quietly to his front porch. His heart skipped. She felt the same way, he knew she did, so why didn’t he just say something now? He took her into his arms again and hugged her tightly.
“I miss you every day” he said so quietly he thought she might not hear. She sighed and gently kissed his cheek without any indication that she had heard his admission. She left his arms and with out another word went to her car and drove away without a backwards glance.
He took the silver K out of his pocket and rubbed it as he fought back the intense emotion that was creeping steadily up his throat.
“Everyday of my life” he whispered to it and slid it back to its safe home. He turned and closed the door on a chance he knew would never come again.
