Chapter 15


They left Grace, Pompey and Brad in the small room, to watch the barricaded door, they hadn't heard any noise coming from there but they decided not to leave their backs uncovered. Brody was going to pair with Josie and Rob and Renee were paired up, the thinking being that Brody would be able to watch out for himself and Josie and Renee could handle herself with Rob getting her back. The went out into the terminal, trying to keep as far from the glass windows as possible, hoping that they wouldn't draw any attention from anything that might happen past the windows. Before they ventured out they had discussed their best course of action. Josie actually came up with the plan.

"We should go to a car rental desk, we can get keys there and then we would know where to find the cars too, they are always parked in one area and the keys will be marked with license plates." She was slowly coming out of the shock that she had been mired in.

So that was what they were doing, inching slowly along going to the left of the room they were in. They passed two domestic airline ticket counters, a magazine shop that was locked up tightly and the public washrooms, down another 15 feet was the Budget Car Rental Desk. Renee and Brody kept watch while Josie and Rob went behind the desk to the pegboard with the keys hanging on it.

“We need to try to get something big for all of us. A van or an SUV.” Josie said quickly looking at the keys to see if the type of car was labeled on the tags as well.

“But what about gas? Those SUV s suck up a lot of fuel. We can't know how long we're going to be in it and how long it will be before we can gas up.” Renee said from the other side of the desk.

“That's true...do you think we should take two vehicles? Then we are still in the same situation. We will need gas for two cars instead.” Josie replied.

“Let's take a van, we can pack it up with supplies and I would prefer not splitting up.” Brody decided.

“Here are keys for an Astro van that should be a good size for us and aren't vans better on gas then SUV s?” Josie asked. Brody shrugged and the others took that as an affirmation.

“Let's get back to the others now.” Brody instructed and they all took the same slow, cautious walk back to their safe room.

“Now we just need to figure out where in the parking lots Budget stored their cars and get into it quick. We can't waste time out there.” Brody told them all, hoping some of them would have a plan.

“We could have 4 people go out for the van and the rest wait by the front doors, then the van could pull up and the others could jump inside. It would be a lot easier on Grandma.” Renee suggested.

“Good idea.” Pompey agreed.

“We could try the restaurants and coffee shops in here and see if there are any non-perishables that we could use.” Josie suggested.

“Excellent Josie. Let's do that and then we need to decide whether we stay here one more night or start driving now and risk being on the road in a strange place.” Brody asked them all.

“I think we should risk it. We can get a road map from the Budget desk and go. I don't like being here.” Brad piped up.

“I agree with Brad. I think we should go as soon as possible.” Rob spoke up.

“Alright then let's go search for some food. The same teams will go. Grace, Pompey and Brad stay here. The rest of you let's go.”
