Chapter 16
CHAPTER 16
I got to sing the National Anthem, that is my contribution (other than the duet with Kelly) to the show. My God, I'm Tamyra. If I ever have to resort to appearing as a special guest on the American Idol 10 tour I'm going to kill myself.
I think that Kelly's the only one singing her own songs, lucky bitch. I stand backstage watching her on the monitors, she reaches behind her and fiddles with her mic pack, well that's not encouraging.
"Hey, you coming to the after party?" asks Anthony.
"There's an after party?" No-one ever tells me anything!
"Not officially but a whole group of us are going to hit the clubs." He smirks. "You can bring your girlfriend if you want."
"She's not my girlfriend." I reply automatically, I wonder how much Carrie has told him. "But, yeah, I'm up for it." God knows I'll be needing a drink once this is all over.
"Great." Bo calls him over so he excuses himself and wanders off.
"She really is good, isn't she." Carrie says coming up behind me to watch Kelly perform.
"You didn't know that already?"
"Of course I did. Whatever I think of her personally, I still think she's incredibly talented. I'll never be as good as her."
That makes two of us. "Yeah, well who is anyway?"
"Hello girls." It's Paula. I don't really have anything bad to say about Paula, she may be a total alcoholic who's addicted to prescription drugs but really she's harmless. It would be like making fun of a retarded child.
"Hi Paula."
One of the PA's calls her away. "I'll be right back." Paula promises. Why? It's not like we were having an in depth conversation or anything.
A huge burst of applause makes me turn around. Damn I missed half of Kelly's performance. Why do I have to get distracted so easily?
She talks to Ryan for a second before she walks off the stage to join me and Carrie. Paula chooses that moment to wander back to us. "Oh no, Carrie you're multiplying." She gasps, looking at the three of us and then down at the glass bottle she's holding.
"Whatcha drinking there Paula?" Kelly asks.
"Water." She answers honestly. If by water she means vodka she's being honest right?
"Paula you remember that it's not good to mix your pills with alcohol, don't you?" Carrie asks, obviously coming to the same conclusion I had.
"Yessssssss." She draws the word out. "I have to go now." She toddles off, taking a swig from her 'water' bottle.
"She's actually gotten worse, hasn't she?" Kelly asks in astonishment.
Carrie and I nod in unison.
"Carrie, you're on next." A PA calls.
"I gotta go. Diana, I'll talk to you later." She touches my arm briefly before running off. Why did she have to do that? Now Kelly's going to have a freak out over it.
"You nervous?" Why? Should I be? Do you know something that I don't? Wait this is Kelly, of course she doesn't.
"No." At least I have a fifty percent chance of getting the answer right, even if I have no idea what she's talking about.
Kelly smiles and cups my cheek. "Good, we'll be great. And I promise that I won't blush when I look at you." Oh, she's talking about the song. I guess this means she doesn't mind Carrie flirting with me.
I open my mouth to reply when I feel someone's hand on my arm. What is it with these people and touching my fucking arms?
I turn around and am nearly blinded by the light on a camera. It's Latoya and her film crew, she's being running around doing backstage reports for E!
"Kelly, Diana. You two mind answering a few questions?" She asks.
Whatever.
She talks to Kelly first, she really is one of the worst interviewers I've ever seen. She's reading her questions off cue cards for fuck's sake.
I'm not really paying attention to the conversation so I'm startled when Kelly puts her arm around my shoulders. "If all goes according to plan Diana will be opening for me on my next tour."
Latoya seems surprised. "Is that right Diana?"
"It is, I'm very excited." I automatically slip my arm around Kelly's waist.
"Great. I've got a question here for you too." Latoya shuffles her cards around looking for the right one. It's called improvisation Latoya, look it up. How can they show any of her segments on TV if she's this bad, the magic of editing I guess. "Okay, Diana tell me, what's one thing that most people don't know about you?"
"That I'm bi-" I pause just long enough to send half of the collective audience's minds on an express trip to the gutter. "-lingual. I can sort of speak Spanish." I finish with an innocent giggle, to make everyone who thought I was going to say bisexual mentally bitchslap themselves. If they show this, which they probably won't.
"Ah, thanks for that. I think we've got enough here. We got to go find Bo." Latoya says, rushing off with her film crew trailing along after her. I do not envy them.
"Was it something I said?"
Kelly looks at me in awe. "I can't believe you did that."
One of the PA's comes up to us. "You're on in five minutes ladies."
"You ready?" I ask Kelly, who is adjusting her pants so everyone can see her tattoo.
"So ready."
