Chapter Eighteen

"Well now that we're here alone Paula, what ARE you going to do with me?" Simon asked, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.

I giggled and began to suggest we find a place a little more private, but I was interrupted.

"You know, I could use this on the show. 'Simon and Paula caught alone together after hours,'" we heard a voice call from the back of the auditorium.

With that Simon and I jerked away from each other, making it all the more painfully obvious that we were up to something. Simon ran his hands through his hair with annoyance, obviously frustrated that we kept getting interrupted.

I turned to the direction the voice came from to find Ryan sauntering towards us, smiling like the cat who just ate the canary.

"Hello Seabuscuit." Simon nodded towards him, as he ran his index finger along his bottom lip, a smirk playing on his lips.

I laughed, a bit awkwardly, and offered my own greeting to Ryan as he joined us.

"What are you two lovebirds doing here this late at night? Hiding from your girlfriend?" he asked as he came to where we were, placing a kiss on my right cheek.

"No, in fact, I was just getting home to her," Simon said as he glanced at his watch, retrieving his empty Coke cup, cell phone, cigarettes, and keys from the table.

"You probably should, you wouldn't want her hearing from anyone that you two were here alone at this time of night." Ryan kidded, doing his best to get a rise out of Simon.

"Well, we're not technically alone...Randy just left," I offered, trying to make the situation seem somewhat less scandalous.

And with that, Simon's cell phone went off, flashing and vibrating madly as Terri's caller id popped up on the screen.

Good timing, I thought to myself as I watched Simon take the call.

"Cowell," he answered in a very cold, professional tone, practically groaning as her voice came through the other end.

"Yes." He said, eyeing me as he half listened. "No, just me, Paula, and Ryan...We were just finishing up...Right...Okay, I'll be there in a half hour or so...Chinese? Yes, I'll pick it up before I head home...Goodbye love."

"Tightening that ball and chain, isn't she?" Ryan asked as Simon hung up.

"No comment." Simon responded, a bit tight-lipped as he retreated from us, Ryan tight on his heels.

"So what exactly did I interrupt here?"

"You wish you knew, don't you Seacrest?" Simon joked, walking quicker to escape Ryan's questioning. "What are you doing here anyway? Don't you have your own girlfriend to annoy?"

"Yeah, but when I saw your car parked here, I had to stop by and see just what kind of party I was missing out on...and apparently it was a good one." Ryan responded, patting Simon on the back.

Car.

Shit.

"Wait, Simon!" I called, jumping from my own seat to catch up with him. "I don't have my car. I need a ride home."

"I'll take you home, Paula," Ryan offered.

Not exactly what I had in mind, but I guess it'll do, I sighed to myself.

Placing a hand on my right hip, Simon kissed the side of my mouth tenderly, his eyes offering a quiet apology as he pulled back to face me.

"I'll see you both tomorrow night," Simon called over his shoulder as he exited the building quickly.

Ryan turned to face me, a gleam in his eye.

"So, Paula, what exactly DID I interrupt?"

I followed Ryan outside the building to his car, just in time to see Simon speed out of the parking lot.

"Nothing," I responded, avoiding his questioning gaze.

"Seriously?"

"Seriously."

I'm a terrible liar, I thought to myself, suddenly overcome with a fit of giggles.

"Come on Paula. Be serious for five minutes. There are no cameras, there are no reporters. Its just me...Ryan. What is the real story behind Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul?"
