Chapter 17
Chapter 17
“Oh Kate, just forget me. It probably really is best for the both of us,” his voice sounded so far away.
“ I know that it is not the best for me, if I can’t have you I don’t want nobody else. If you tell me you don’t want to see me ever again, I will never bother you again,” I finally got my words back and was gushing my heart out now.
“ I want to see you… But I can’t do that.”
“Why not?” Of course I knew the answer.
“Because I love Rima, I still do. What we did, what we feel is just impossible.”
“So you made your choice?”
“This is not a choice I am making, this is the way it is,” his voice sounded apologetic.
“Then why did you say that you missed me?” I felt confused, frustrated. I knew deep in my heart that he was right, and I admired him for facing the consequences.
“Because I do.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
That phone call must have been the most devastating one in all my life. And I hated Gary for talking me into calling him. I also decided that I had to see him one more time. If I had to accept this, I wanted to say goodbye properly, not over the phone, and not whilst waiting for the taxi. But of course he wouldn’t return to my hotel. I didn’t know if he did that because of the press or because of me.
A few days after Christmas, everybody had returned to the hotel, and working life continued. The weather had turned grey, it was cold and rainy which matched my mood perfectly. I was sitting at my small kitchen table where I once sat with Alan, and stirred in my coffee. Gazing out of the window and scratching Toby with my free hand.
A soft knock on the door stopped my daydreaming. Sighing, I got up and opened the door. It was Gary.
“Did you call him?”
“Yes.”
“Well?!”
“It was the most stupidest thing I ever did!”
“But why?!” Gary did not ask to enter but walked in my room as if he had been there a hundred times.
“Because he doesn’t want to see me anymore.”
“He said that?” He looked around and poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down.
I was astonished by his rudeness, “Would you mind leaving?” I asked him.
“In a minute, you see, I find that hard to believe. I’ve never seen him like he was when he met you.”
“Maybe you should talk to him then,” I sighed once more and looked at Gary drinking my coffee.
“So, what are you going to do now,” he said, ignoring my remarks.
“I’m sure you have another suggestion?” I asked him sarcastically.
“I do, actually, do you have any sugar?”
I passed him the sugar.
“You should come with me to the set,” he said while adding a huge amount of sugar in the coffee.
“To the set? I don’t know. Maybe I have to let this go. I don’t want to ruin his life and I don’t want to stalk him. I would want to talk to him though.”
“That’s settled then, go get changed you’re coming with me.”
“What! Now?” I nearly choked on my coffee.
“Yes now! He starts working again today. Go on! Go change, I’m not taking you like that.”
“I’m not going with you.”
“Oh yes you are, go change I’ll make some new coffee because this tastes like vile.” And with that he pushed me towards my bathroom and opened the door for me.
“You are unbelievable,” I stammered as I closed the door.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An hour later I was sitting in his car on my way to the film set. I couldn’t believe he drove himself. And I couldn’t believe that I was doing this either. Nervously I looked at Gary. He looked too cool for his age. The grey in his hair was showing, he wore huge sunglasses which was pretty useless as the windows of his car where all darkened, and a cigarette dangled from his lips.
“This is going to be a disaster, what am I going to tell him?” I said it more to myself than anyone in particular.
“You could tell him how sexy he looks as Snape.” Gary grinned, deeply inhaling from the cigarette.
“And how come you are so involved? Is this your personal project or something,” I asked him.
“Maybe.”
“Prick,” I whispered.
“I heard that.”
When we arrived at the high gates of the movie set, it suddenly dawned on me, that I was about to enter somewhere exciting. People all over the world would kill to be on the set of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. We drove through some gates, which Gary opened with his card. We parked at an underground car park. Heading to some back doors he nodded at some security guard and pointed at me saying, “She’s with me.” The security guard smiled at us and opened the door for us.
We entered a huge hall, filled with green screens, lights and camera’s. On the floor lay red carpet in small strips guiding a sort of path through the hall.
Gary saw me looking and said, “So we can practice for the premiere.”
I rolled my eyes.
He walked towards some white doors.
“Those are the dressing rooms, Alan’s room is the third one on the right. Good luck!”
“What?! Don’t leave me here! What am I supposed to do?”
“I think I did enough for now, and I have some dying to do if you’ll excuse me.”
“Oh come on..,” I tried, but he was leaving already, “Bastard!”
“I heard that!” he screamed without turning around.
Dawdling towards the door I felt extremely out of place. There was a lot of noise, and a lot of people passing by looking at me as if it was written on my forehead that I didn’t belong here.
Taking a deep breath I gathered up the courage to knock on the door. As I knocked, I nearly closed my eyes and secretly hoped he wasn’t there.
