Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Pompey and Renee led the way, Pompey would drive, Renee would take the seat next to him, Josie and Brad would take the seats in the very back, leaving the middle seats open for Rob, Brody and Grace to quickly hop into. They kept close to the wall and low to the ground, Renee and Josie would look for the marked parking lot while Brad and Pompey watched for zombies. When they got close enough to the cars in the parking lot, they weaved through them, keeping their heads low, they saw no movement to indicate there was anything moving around in the parking lot or the surrounding area.

“There's the sign. To the right. Near that bus.” Josie said to the others. Pompey led the way, there were four Astro vans with the Budget logo on the license plate, Josie quickly looked at the number on the tag and pointed to the white one . Brody unlocked the door, pressed the locks to let the others in and started the engines as soon as they were seated and had their seat belts on.

“Once the engine starts we may have company, so we have to be fast. I'm pulling up as close to the doors as I can, Renee jump out if it's safe and open the door so Rob and Brody can get Grace in faster. If it's not safe, we are going to pull away to a safe distance and shoot the fuck out of them and go back for the others. Understood?” Pompey appeared every bit the military man he once was and the others agreed with him immediately. He started the van and quickly pulled out and followed the arrows that pointed the fastest way to the front of the main terminal. They encountered one zombie in the middle of the road...a very thin old woman in a hospital gown, she was missing a leg and was crawling along the ground, a path of reddish black gore, flowing from her chewed off stump.

“Brace yourself.” Pompey called and ran the thing over with the van, so thin and frail it felt like barely more then a bump.

They pulled up to the door, checked to make sure it was safe for Renee to get out, once they did, Renee got out, opened the side door of the van and waved to the others to come out. Brody practically carried Grace to the van with Rob carrying the four bags of food and clothes that they had in their possession. Brody had Rob get in first, Grace was in the middle and Brody sat next to the door. He slammed it shut and the left the airport parking lot, passing a few zombie who seemed to wander aimlessly about.

“Let's stop at the first phone booth and get a phone book. That can tell us where the nearest gun shop is. Hopefully we can get inside of it.” Renee spoke out.

“What if the closest gun store is in the middle of the city?” Brad asked.

“We need to avoid highly populated areas. We should be able to find a smaller store somewhere outside of town, where all the rednecks are.” Brody answered him.

They took the highway that went around the city, wanting to get ammo and supplies before trying to get to the harbors or marinas. Stopping at the first gas station they passed, while, Brody and Renee stood guard, Pompey filled the tank and then they went into the station that was empty but unlocked and filled up several coolers, with water and sodas from the refrigerated displays as well as all the chips, cookies and chocolate bars on the shelves. Then they took 6 large jerry cans and filled them with gas and loaded them in the back of the van. Renee took the whole phone book from behind the counter and brought it back to the van with her. Before they left she looked up guns stores and found several in the city and a couple outside of the city. They chose the quickest route to the store. Along the way they past houses with doors and windows broken off, abandoned cars on the highway, most of the cars had blood visible in them or on the windows. They saw a child's teddy bear laying on the ground in a pool of blood.

“We should be close to the store now. Keep your eyes open for any activity.” Brody said but before they could even finish their sentence they came upon a gruesome scene. Two zombies were on the ground tearing apart what looked like a young man who was still alive and screaming in agony. Standing on the roof of a small shed was a girl about 17, screaming in horror as another zombie was reaching for her.

“We've got to help her.” Grace said, even as Brody reached to open the door.
