Chapter 2

When she got back to the hotel she flopped down on the bed and let out a relaxing breath.
"Oh god, this has been so great. I am so glad I did this" she told the ceiling as she lay there almost trembling with excitement.
She bounced back up still energized and began getting ready for bed. When she finished she stood in the mirror looking at her PJ's and her freshly scrubbed face. She smiled to herself and then laughed, if they only could see her now she thought again. She was still so jazzed with nervous energy she wonder how she would ever get to bed. She walked over and fished in her purse for her pack of cigerattes. When she pulled out her last pack she found it empty.
"Damn it!" she said and chucked the crushed pack haphazardly at the trash can.
"Oh well," she looked at her reflection in the mirror "no one knows me here" she decided and left the room to go on the hunt. There were no machines to be found at the hotel. She spotted a mini-mart across the road and decided to venture across the 4 lane highway. All the lights were on and there were cars in the lot which only increased her confusion when she found the doors locked. She tried again and had to regain her balance when the door wouldn't give way. Damn it she thought now what am I going to do. She was walking defeatedly back to her room when she heard someone hollar "Hey!"
She didn't stop because as she reminded herself eariler, she didn't know anyone here.
"Hey dimples" rang out a little louder this time.
Dimples? that got her attention and she looked around for the source. No one there. Was she loosing her mind or just hearing things? She shook it as to clear it. Turing back around she happened to see Bubba's smiling face leaning over the railing at her.
"Oh hey, you again" she said with that big smile again.
"Come on up here" he said motioning with his hand.
"Ok" she said without a thought for what she looked like or had on.
When she was walking up to him she noticed he was talking to Chad.
"what are you doing out at this hour" Bubba said with a welcoming smile as she approached.
Chad gave her ensemble a weary glance and turned his back again.
"Oh, out searching for bad habits" she said as she bounced on the ball of her feet the last few steps.
"well I am crashing, check you in the am man" Chad said giving Bubba's out streached had a complicated slap. "Nice to see you again" Chad said with backwards gesture but not actually looking back at her. He went into his room and you could hear the locks click into place.
"well isn't he pleasant" she said rolling her eyes
"Awe, don't mind him" Bubba said gesturing to the door absently "So what are these bad habits you are out so late searching for?"
"well...." she grinned at him sheepishly "I went to the store for smokes and a drink" she finished looking guiltily at the floor.
Bubba shook his head and looked at the floor in a I can't believe this motion.
"what?" she said with a twinge of guilt
He looked back up at her and shot her a winning smile. "I think we have some of those bad habits around here somewhere" he said gesturing to the door next to Chad's room.
He unlocked the door with a card key and she covered her mouth with her hand.
"Oh my good god" she said as her mind geared up
"What? What is it?" he said looking around jerkily. His body on gaurd.
"I can't believe I did that" she said slapping a hand to her forhead.
He relaxed and looked at her in confusion "What did you do?"
"I left my damn card in my room" she said gesturing frustratedly at the white plastic card in his hand.
He laughed at her, more relieved than amused.
She entered the room as he held the door for her. Without thinking, her mind on her stupid mistake rather than manners, she flopped on to the bed with a frustrated sigh. It took a full minute of him just standing there staring down at her for her to realize what she had just done.
She raised up on to her elbows and grinned at him wearily "I really need a cigeratte" she said with a dramatic huff to get the hair out of her eyes again.
At that moment she heard the water turn off somewhere. It occured to her that she hadn't realized it was running untill it shut off. She looked at Bubba in confusion. Who's room were they in if not his? He raised on amused eyebrow at the look on her face and noticed that she was about to ask a question when the bathroom door opened.
She jerked her head around quickly to see who it was and her heart completely stopped.
There was Jordan still wet from his obvious shower in nothing but a stingy white hotel bath towel. Her mouth fell open carelessly and she just stared at him.
Jordan jumped slightly back into the bathroom in surprise at the sight of them.
"whoa! sorry guys I didn't know that I had visitors" he said smiling at them both.
"sorry to surprise you, I didn't know you were.....well....um..." Bubba trailed off looking him up and down amused.
Jordan laughed nervously looking over at Kristy proped up on the bed.
"what did you guys need?" he said looking back at Bubba and trying hard to surpress a laugh. There was a long awkward pause as they just exchanged glances.
"Kristy was looking for something to drink and a spare cigeratte. If you have some handy?" Bubba said answering for Kristy who seemed to be mentally stalled at the moment. She was still proped up on the bed gapeing at him.
"Oh yeah I think there are some spares around here" he was searching around one handed. The other happened to be holding up the towel.
When Jordan's back was turned, Bubba shot a glance over at the apparently petrified Kristy. Her mouth was still hanging open and he made quick head gestures as an indication for her to say something to him.
"Uh....um....well....its really not that big of a deal" She finally said after a full minute had passed.
"The store across the street was closed" she said as if answering a question that hadn't been asked. She finally got the strength to sit up right on the bed.
Bubba covered his mouth and leaned over heaving with laughter, it seems he could hold it in no longer. He had never been in a situation like this before.
Jordan turned around and looked at her in utter confusion. "You mean you tried to go to the store for the stuff and it was closed?" he finished with a smile at his apparent translation. He wasn't sure just how to react to her.
She said nothing just stared at him.
Bubba continued to shake with muffled laughter.
"Kristy?" Jordan said trying to snap her out of her daze.
"Oh yeah, thats what I meant" she said shaking her head. The sight of him with water still on him was absolutely throwing her mind for a loop. Then all of a sudden with out so much as a word she got up and walked out of the room. She knew her face was red and she was trying hard not to visably shake. She had totally embarrassed herself and she just wanted to die. Outside she paused on the railing to steady herself and turned to walk to her room. She stopped suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. She had fucking blown it, her one chance. She was so stupid. She covered her face with her hand and almost started to cry.
"Hey" it came from behind her.
She didn't want to turn around. She had embarrassed herself enough for a life time and she didn't want to pile on more at this moment.
"Hey, where are you going?" she felt hands close around her shoulders.
Her body reflexively jerked into a stiff posture. Oh god who was behind her? She chanced a glance to the left and saw Bubba's massive hand on her shoulder. She let out the breath she had been holding and relaxed. She heard him laugh behind her at her reaction. When she turned around to face him, the look on her face shocked him completely.
"Hey, whats wrong?" he said sympathetically with one hand still on her shoulder. She looked like her dog had just died.
She had to pause before she spoke. She wanted to just sob into his shoulder. This was such a big let down. She had fucked it all up, and it was the perfect chance to get to know him. She just shook her head.
"I just acted like a complete idiot" she forced out.
"Well, it was pretty stupid to just get up and walk out when we were doing our best to help you. And you left without your requests" he said with a triumphant smile and holding up the can of Dr. Pepper and the cigeratte.
"Oh sorry, thank you" she said reaching out for them.
He pulled them back from her reach. "What the hell was going on back there with you," he said with a grin.
She was so annoyed at his interuption of her wallow. She stepped back and cocked a hip in a bitching pose.
"Listen, I was being totally stupid. I am embarrassed and I just want to go back to my room and die. Is that ok with you" she snapped out quickly gesturing wildly with her arms.
Bubba, who had seemed to completely ignored her outburst, looked at the cigeratte. "Just how do you plan on lighting this thing? It doesn't look like you have pockets in that get up" he with a laugh and looking her up and down.
She really, really needed that cigeratte and her eyes followed it woefully.
"I have a lighter in my room...." she groaned and put a hand to her face. "which is fucking locked" she finished stomping her feet like a tantruming child.
Bubba laughed at her misery and before he could speak, Jordan's door flew open and he sprang out like he was being chased. This time he was fully clothed in a tee shirt and basketball shorts.
"Where did she....." he trailed off spotting them.
She couldn't meet his gaze, so she stared off into the parking lot.
Bubba turned around and handed him back the drink and the smoke. "she is having some issues" he said with his back to her like she wasn't even there.
"Excuse me gentlemen, but I am right here" she snapped with little taps of her foot.
"I know where you are" Bubba laughed at her annoyance "I am going to go down to the desk and get you back into your room"
She stopped the taping "oh no you don't have to do that. I can handle it" she finished and she was touch by his overprotectiveness.
"You don't have your purse, just how are you going to prove who you are and that you are staying here?" he said
"well...." she hadn't really thought that far ahead. She didn't have anything with her not even her car keys.
"Look, you stay here with me and your habits" Jordan began and dangled the drink and the cigeratte as if in reminder "and Bubba will sort our you key issues" he finished in a is everybody happy tone.
"Well I don't....." she began
"I will be back" Bubba said, making the decision for her. He walked off muttering something to herself and she though he had said those two.
"Come on" Jordan said to her motioning back to his door with the drink. "I am pretty sure I have some matches for this" he finished dangling the cigeratte.
Her mouth almost watered and she followed him reluctantly.
She look around again as she reentered his room. The now infamous white towel was haphazardly thrown near the bathroom door. The mirrored vanity was scattered with random tolietries. Two unopened suitcases stood beside one that looked like it had exploded. Clothes were everywhere. On the small table beside the window there was a half empty pizza box and several empty soda cans.
He watch her look around in amusement.
"Sorry, not much of a house keeper" He said looking around himself and seeing the site of his room.
She just shrugged "I don't blame you. If I didn't have to clean up after myself, I wouldn't."
He laughed nervously. He wasn't quite sure if she was serious or just being sarcastic. He really couldn't figure this girl out.
She walked in further and jumped a little when she heard him close the door.
He laughed "I am sorry. Do you want me to leave it open?" he said pointing back at the door "because I really don't mind leaving it open if it makes you more comfortable" he finished quickly obviously becoming nervous.
She waved it off and forced that smile again. God her cheeks were going to kill her for weeks after this one.
"I'm just fine, I just really, and I mean really need that cigeratte." she said sitting down awkwardly on the end of the unmade bed.
"Ok, Ok, just hold on" He grinned at her and finally relinquished the drink and cigeratte to her. He then began shuffling things around on the dresser looking for something.
"Damn it where are they" he said to himself in a low tone as he worked.
He pulled open a random drawer "A Ha," he said triumphantly "there is nothing like complimentary hotel matches" he finished making a show of presenting them to her.
She stood, reached up and snatch them out of his hand unceromoniously and then was out the door before he could even blink.
She huffed her way down to the stairs and flopped down on the top one. She took out the matches and with a shaking hand struck it and finally inhaled the soothing nicotine.
What the hell was that about? He thought as the door slammed shut behind her. She had seemed calm from earlier, so what did I do now? He went to the door and looked out. Where had she run off to? He looked both ways and finally spotted the outline of her back sitting on the stairs. He stood for a moment in his door and smiled. He didn't know if he should even go over there but for some unknown reason he just couldn't seem to resist the temptation. He had never had a girl react like this to him before. "Well there is a first time for everything" he said to himself and walked over to where she sat.
She had struck her third match and was watching the glowing fire inch closer to her finger when she felt someone over her head blow it out.
"You know if you play with matches you get burned" he said from behind her.
"With my luck tonight I will just burn down the fucking hotel" she said sarcastically as she exhaled smoke.
He laughed and took the space beside her.
He gave a sigh as he sat down.
"I know the feeling, you must have the same luck as I do" he took the box of matches from her.
"are you kidding me?" she said through the smoke of her exhale "how can your life be all that bad?" She really couldn't believe she was calling him out like that but she had already made a fool of herself so why not?
Taken back by her response he laughed nervously
"well, I guess compared to most, my life isn't all that bad but I do have issues" he said looking at her intently.
His brown eyes seemed to swim as she stared back at him. She couldn't believe that just before she saw him in a towel. She pushed that thought out of her mind and concentrated on the here and now. She decided to lighten the mood and took a pull at his shorts.
"Nice out fit" she said taking another drag of her borrowed cigeratte
"Yeah I am quite fond of yours too" he said pulling on her flannel PJ bottoms "are you not cold?"
"Not reallly" she said with a shrug "embarrassment will keep you warm when all else fails" she finished reflexively as she stubbed out the cigeratte.
"want another one?" he said pulling two out of his pocket and grinning
"Thanks," she said appreciatively, man was he reading her mind or what?
He struck a match and offered her the flame. She watched him light his and then quickly leaned over and blew out the match before he had time.
"Just incase you got any pyromaniac ideas" she said with a flirty smile.
He exhaled and return the smile curiously, he thought she just might be flirting with him. There was a long pause as he held her gaze. Those blue green eyes seemed to flash at him with interest. He hadn't done this in so long he wasn't quite sure how it was supposed to go. He was so used to having a girl practially gravel at his feet and for some curious reason this one was challenging him.
"So what is your lifes problems?" she said exhaling and and proping her head on to her hand to look at him.
"I guess nothing really as important as buring down hotels" he laughed not wanting to get to bog down in sorrows
"Yeah you've had some experience with that one" she smirked back at him.
There it was again. The reminder that she was and had been a fan for a long time. Why didn't that bother him? It ususally did but not with her, it just seemed as if she were a friend that just knew his history.
"Hello," she waved a hand infront of him "are you in there" she said taking another long drag
He jumped. "Oh sorry, deep thougth about those problems" he said as he watched her inhale. those lips....he shook his head. What the hell was he doing?
She shifted and leaned her back on the top step for support. "well I guess we all have our issues relative to our situation" she said reflectively thinking about how crappy her week had been.
He mimicked her posture and sighed "Yeah you never really know what someone is going through......"
"untill you have walked a mile" she finished the thought for him.
The fell into a rhythmic conversation that seemed to just flow like they had known each other for years. It seemed to go on for hours but when he looked down at his watch thirty minutes had only passed.
"You still want that drink?" he looked over at her. She was staring up at the dingy stairwell ceiling. A breaze blew her short hair into her eyes and he had to resist the earge to sweep them away.
"Yeah I guess, where the hell is Bubba anyway?" she said looking around.
Damn he had forgotten about that. He now wondered where the big guy had gotten to for so long.
"Don't know I will go run get you that drink and grab my cell so we can locate him" he said standing up and wanting to stretch. He was exhausted after that performance.
She noticed his weariness as he stood and she started to get up.
"You know you are probally so tired, I will let you get some rest. I can find him" she said dusting off her butt "I have bothered you long enough"
Her comment bit him. He wasn't trying to get her to leave. He thought quickly.
"Are you kidding me, at this hour?" He pointed to his watch. "You can't be walking around at this hour by yourself. Just let me go get my cell and I will be right back" he finished with a stay here gesture.
"Ok Ok" she said reflexively and sat back down
Jordan jogged back down to his room and dug his cell out of his sweat soaked jeans that were in a crumpled heap on the floor.
"Bubba! It's Jordan, do you have Kristy's room situation sorted out yet?"
"What? Oh god, really?"
"Ok, yeah she's with me, I will tell her"
Jordan tossed his cell back on the bed and snatched up the Dr. Pepper.
He left his door slightly open and jogged back down to where she was sitting. She was hugging herself and rocking in an effort to stave off the chilly mountian air.
"Oh god, I wasn't thinking, are you cold?" Jordan said bending down to rub her arms quickly.
"Yeah it is pretty chilly" she said with a look down at her PJ's "and you know my get up that I have own" she chuckled with a shiver.
He laughed and continued to rub her arms in a warming gesture.
She returned the laugh half heartedly and rolled her eyes. What was he doing?
"You can stop now or I might catch fire myself from the friction" she said as she felt her skin warm from his attemps.
He stopped and looked down with a mock dejected expression.
"Geez, no one can help you out tonight can they?" he said smiling, he had really just wanted a reason to touch her.
"If it involves men in towels or lightening fires, I don't need help with those thank you" she said playfully pushing at his shoulder.
Seeing his opportunity he grabbed her hand and held it.
Her laugh was cut short as her breath caught in her throat.
She tried to play if off but he noticed the change in the air around them and shot her a grin as he squeezed her hand.
Those deep brown eyes seemed to envelope her as she allowed herself to meet his gaze. With out realizing it she tilted her head in a flirty gesture and returned his grin with one of her own.
He brought her hand up, pushed to his chest and stepped forward.
Immediately her body tensed. She knew that look, the look that every guy had right before they kissed you. His eyes seemed to glaze and there was that dopey grin again. She felt him start to lean in further and she gently pushed back.
"so...did you get a hold of Bubba?" she asked to distract him.
He looked at her with shocked disappointment and turned his head away. Why was she rejecting him? They had just been flirting with each other hadn't they?
"Oh yeah, there is a problem" he said as he dropped her hand. His tone had changed and it was almost flat. "The lock on your door is broken, so you wouldn't have been able to get in with your key" he finished with a defeated shrug. There was a long and weighty pause where they both just looked off. "They are fixing it now" he added with a glance down the stairs.
She had to grin to herself. He was pouting, she had rejected his advances and he was being a fucking baby about it. She was so flattered that he had wanted to kiss her but seeing this side of him made her blood run hot. What did he think he was some kind of sex god? She figured he had always had it easy with girls. Well, she wasn't going to be another notch in his very long belt. Before she could restrain her angry thoughts she opened her mouth.
"Listen, I hope you don't think that because of all of this help you have given me you are getting laid" She stared at him challengingly in the face and was surprised when she saw the flash of anger in his eyes. She had offened him and it amused her.
"What? Is that what you think this is all about?" he asked stepping back from her to gesture around angrily. "Do you think that I stayed up, embarrassed my self when I have to catch a plane at 6:30 in the morning just because I wanted to get laid?" He was royally pissed at her obvious smart mouth. Man he had really missed judged her. Why was she being so incrediably ungrateful.
She tried to hide her amusement at his defensiveness. She wasn't really trying to be rude. She was just a little pissed that he thought she was going to be that easy.
"Embarrassed yourself?" she asked with a grin to throw off his anger
"What?" he snapped at her, his anger was quickly shifting into confusion. What was she asking that for?
"You said that you embarrassed yourself tonight and I want to know how" she continued in a playful voice.
He shook his head. My god now she had him smiling again. How does she do that to him? She was pushing his buttons like a remote control. Buttons that he wasn't even aware of having.
"You have gone all spacey on me" she said grabbing his arm to give him a shake.
Electricity seemed to shoot through him from her grasp. She almost jerked back from the jolt. The electricity that flowed from her touch made his legs go weak. The look on her face combined with the strength in her grasp of his arm had turned his limbs completely to Jello.
"Jordan?" her expression had shifted into one of concern "are you ok?" she released his arm and slid her hand down to grab his.
The geniune concern on her face caused a complete change in him. Without even realizing it his outer shell that he always kept up for everyone around him fell away with his simple admission.
"no, no I am not ok," he paused to gather his frail composure "to be honest, you are getting to me" he finally squeezed her hand back.
"getting to you?" she asked with a confused smile. Where the hell was he going with that?
"Yeah" was all he said as he shook his head and grinned. He released her hand and ran his hands frustratedly through his hair making it stand up on end.
She mistook his openess for weariness and figured she probably should let him be for the night. Not wanting yet to break the connection they had seemed to form in the short hours since their first meeting, she reached up to straighten his hair and had intended to thank him for all of his help and trouble but never got around to it.
With the soft and gentle touch of her hand on his hair his insides jolted. He jumped like a startled dear. The softness of her laugh and the simple way she caressed his hair made something inside him meltaway even further that he ever knew it could. He found himself wanting to hold her, desperately needing to feel her warmth next to him.
The chilly wind blew her hair as she stood looking at him with anticipation.
He placed his hand on the wall beside her and let out a low laugh as she leaned back against it almost in retreat.
"Listen I know your married" he began softly looking at his free hand
"Yeah and so are you" she said quietly at the stairs as if embarrassed
"Excuse me?" he looked up in shock
"Your married too" she said with an awkward shrug
"yeah, I guess so" he said as he absently rubbed his ringless finger
"are you thinking about your husband right now" he said in a whisper as he looked back into her eyes
"No" she breathed out as she bit her lip
"I'm not thinking about her either" Jordan said almost to himself
"so what are you thinking about" she asked him tentatively
"well" he said reaching over with his free hand to rub at her softly blowing hair "I was thinking about what your lips would feel like"
"what?" she said breathlessly
"your lips" he said stepping closer and rubbing his thumb over her bottom lip.
She sucked in a nervous breath
"what were you thinking about" he asked his voice becoming thick as he watched his thumb trace her mouth
"I am just glad that we are outside" she said with a smile in her eyes
"hugh?" he asked in surprise
"Yeah, I am so glad that we are in public because I am forced to control myself" she added stepping closer to him
There was only and inch between them now and he could feel his body pulling himself toward her like a magnet. He was so over come with desire for her. He could smell her light perfume on the breeze and feel her soft clean face under his warm hand. Her short hair played over her forhead lightly as she looked at him with clouded heavy eyes.
He let out a soft laugh and didn't pause for thought of consequences or her reaction. He leaned in, grasped her face gently in his hands and softly kissed her.
When his lips met hers the ground under her feet seemed to fall away. She couldn't help herself as she pressed into his incredibly warm body.
"I guess I am glad we are in public too" he said looking slyly around.
She pressed herself against him again before she could stop herself. His lips felt better that she ever thought they would. He smiled with an intense desire as he pressed her back against the wall.
"Careful" he whispered in her ear.
Her insides shuttered and she thought she would loose her mind with the warmth against her. She felt her middle was actually pulsing. Their noses lightly grazed one another as they stood breathing each other in. Their breaths became shorter as the tension between them intensified. She knew that now was the breaking point. If she went any further there was no going back. She never knew that she could feel this much desire for a man she didn't even know but she did. Now was the only point that she could walk away. When his lips brushed hers again her moment passed and she fell over the cliff of uncertian desire without even a look back.
"I'm sorry, I just don't think I can be outside anymore" he whispered as he intensified the kiss.
When it ended she found herself leaning into his departing body wanting more. The knowing smile he shot her filled his impossibly deep brown eyes and she offered no resistance as he swept her up into his arms.
Thinking of absolutely nothing but his warm strong arms around her, she nuzzled her head into his neck as he carried her into his room.
