Chapter Two
"Let me drive." The Driver ordered, she climbed into the passenger seat without thinking twice, the looks of horror on their faces mixed with the screams she could hear on the freeway, made her know she had to get out of there. Rob got in the back seat and The driver got behind the wheel. "Do up your seat belts."
"What the fuck was happening back there?" Rob asked, his voice high and full of fear. "That was no riot. They were like animals."
"I don't know, we need to get to a safe place and call the cops." Just as the driver said that, he saw several police cars speed past them and head for the freeway.
"I guess they know." The woman said. "Where are we going?"
"I'm going to my place first to get my guns. Then I am taking him back to his house. It's got dogs and gates and security. It should be safe, til we know what's going on."
"You can come there if you need a place to go." Rob offered. "I'm Rob."
"Renee. Could we stop at my place and get my Grandma? She's old and there's no one else to take care of her." Renee asked.
"Sure. I'm Brody." The driver said. Rob wondered what would have happened if his usual driver hadn't been sick. Would he be dead up on that freeway?
"Brody, thanks for saving my ass back there." Rob said.
"That's my job." Brody replied. He flipped on the radio and they listened to the news spouting out of the speakers.
"Authorities are advising you avoid large crowds and highly populated areas, if you can't get out of the city, barricade your house. We still don't know what is causing these attacks. One caller said that he had shot one of his attackers and he got up after being shot in the chest and kept coming for him. The caller said only after he shot the attacker in the head did he stop moving. The caller also stated that the attacker made no noise other than a few moans and had super human strength. This caller just confirms all the other reports we are getting. Again we advise you to get out of densely populated areas and avoid the center of the city where the most activity seems to be contained to for now."
"Holy shit! How could someone keep going after getting shot in the chest?" Renee wondered out loud. Rob remembered the man biting the woman's neck and felt his stomach turn, threatening to heave up its contents.
"This is like a bad dream." Rob said.
"It's worse than anything I have ever dreamt." Renee said looking at the window at the row of cars, driving towards the outskirts of L.A.
"Here's my place. You got anything I can use as a weapon?" Brody asked Renee.
"There are golf clubs in the trunk." Brody nodded and popped the trunk and ran out. He left the keys in the car and the engine running.
"Keep this door locked til you see me coming back, and if I am not back in 5 minutes leave without me."
"Brody..."
"I'm serious Rob. Get out of here." Rob nodded. Brody left and Rob said to Renee.
"I can't drive. So if we need to leave quickly you are going to have to do it."
"Ok, but he'll be back right?" She asked staring at Brody's apartment building. There were several people walking around on the street, some of them seemed oblivious, others were crying and carrying bags and weapons, baseball bats, tire irons one woman had a frying pan. In less than two minutes Brody came running out, he was covered him blood, he had a gun in one hand a bag in other hand. Renee unlocked the door, Brody got in and threw the bag back to Rob.
"What happened?" They both asked.
"My superintendent attacked me, started hissing, his eyes were strange, totally back, all the colour was gone. I hit him with the golf club, really hard, it barely even made him pause. I managed to shove him out of my way and race upstairs, there was an old lady in who lived next door, she was dead in the hallway, her throat ripped out. I think he did it. I got my guns and ammo and found him in the hallway, blew his head off like the radio said."
"Hissing? I saw a man attacking a woman on the highway, his eyes were all black too. What the fuck is going on?" Rob asked, his brain couldn't even process the information.
"I hope my Grandma is ok." Renee said fear dripping from her voice. Brody and Rob didn't reply, they hoped grandma was ok too. Luckily, Renee's house was on the way to Rob's so they didn't even have to go out of their way. Renee's street was deserted, no sign of life anywhere.
"Either of you ever shoot a gun before?"
