''So what?'' Juliet said. ''Why do you tease me about it? Big deal, you morron.''
"Juliet," Andy said, with a warning tone. He didn't like the 'children' to call eachother nasty things...They certainly hadn't got that fron him.
''Because it was something fishy about it..''
''No, but it's private. How would you feel if I would be so curious about all the stuff YOU are writing?''
Juliet paused and then added: ''By the way, writing seems to be too sophisticated for you. Why don't
you go and dig in the dirt as you always do instead? Or watch some porn instead?''
''Shut up!'' Dylan shouted across the table.
''Stop it!'' Andy said sharply. ''You two are nagging on eachother all the time.''
''Yeah yeah..'' Juliet said, and she stopped. Her stupid brother wasn't worth it anyways, she thought.
''Don't get upset about that.'' Dave said. ''Just relax. We won't read your journal, not anyone of us.''
''Promise?''
''Yes. Reading one's journal is one of the worst thing you can do to another person if you ask me.''
Those words calmed Juliet down abit, and they continued their conversation in peace, dropping the
subject and talking easily about other subjects and focusing on eating.
"Juliet?" Lily asked across the table. "Do you want to come with me to the dance this Saturday
evening?"
"Yeah, Juliet really would need a good, rough dance that burns alot of fat." Dylan said, laughing,
but stopping abruply as he saw the angered look Andy gave him.
Juliet thought about it. It usually used to be alot of people in town at Saturdays, and yeah, boys
would ask her if she wanted to dance. But she didn't knew whether she wanted to go or not this Saturday, however.
"We'll see, Lily. I'll think about it, okay?"
"I think you should go," Dave said. "You just sit in your room all day Juliet, I think it would be
good for you if you came out for a moment. Meet new friends and socializing. You can either take the bus or I can drive you."
"Yeah yeah" she said, not wanting to think about it or deal with it right now.
After dinner, Juliet helped Martin out with the dishes. She didn't have that much contact with Martin, but more contact than with Alan however. Martin would make these lame jokes, and Juliet would laugh at him, rather than at his joke. But it was allright. She liked doing the dishes. Liked the warm water embracin her hands, hearing Alan play the piano from another room, or Dave putting on a record from their vast CD collection. This night, Dave played a record with PJ Harvey, and Juliet sighed, not being a big fan of that music. Better than Martin playing Gary Glitter though.
"Juliet?" Alan asked, coming up to her and Martin after they'd finished the dishes. "You want to go and play the piano for just a while?"
Juliet smiled. "Will you learn me something new?"
"If you want to." Alan said and showed of his white, slightly crooked teeth in a smile. "Let's go to the piano room."
She knew the others would watch TV while she and Alan focused on the music. She loved being Alan's pupil. More than everything else, she loved the way he would go easy on her. Juliet couldn't remember any single time where Alan had gotten really upset because she hadn't been able to play a certain piece of music.
They sat down and Alan pulled out several sheets of music from a chest in the quite large room and a book they hardly had used during all these years.
"Do you want to go through the theme for 'Star Wars' again, or do you want to learn something new?"
"Something new." She said quickly. "Definetely."
"Right then." he said and selected a sheet of paper and set in onto the canterbury.
Juliet didn't pay attention to the name of the song or the name of the composer. She only stared at his hands. Those beautiful, quite large hands, with those long, beautiful, slender fingers. His hands was nothing like a girls' or a womans' hands however...They seemed to belong to some androgyne, etheric, gentle and kind creature from outer space. She would sometimes look at Alan as an alien. She didn't know why, but she just did because of his eyes and his hands. He once had told her that she would certainly would grow up to a beautiful, attractive woman.
She remember it so clearly...It was only about seven months ago...
They had been sitting outside, enjoying the afternoon sun on the poorch. She, Dave and Lily had been sitting on the poorchstep and looked through old photos, talking about their memories together.
"Do you remember where this photo was taken? It was on that beach where Andy got ants in his shorts that bit him!" And they had laughed. They had looked at pictures of them, mostly old ones, but also photos only from a year back or two...
Alan had smiled and laughed along with them at their statements, adding a comment here and there also. But he had sat in their hammock, picking at his guitar, making it ring out beautifully. He produced the most pleasant background sounds. He had said it then to her. Right after Dave and Lily had gone inside to get more of their photos to look at.
"You've changed alot through the years Juliet. All of you have. I'm proud of you. I think you will grow up to be a beautiful woman Juliet." And that was it. He had continued playing his guitar, and she didn't say anything to that, since Lily and Dave had returned. It felt a bit weird that Alan said that to her. But Juliet found herself longing... Not for Alan, but a boy who would be like Alan, that would treat her like Alan and stick by her like Alan.
"So there's a transition at the end of the last chorus...Juliet?"
"Yeah?" she shook her head and looked his in the eyes, where they sat, only inches from eachother.
"Are you with me love?" he asked. "What's been bothering you lately?"
"What do you mean?" she asked, feeling her face blush aganist her own will.
"You've seemed a little more thoughtful than usual," he said. "Is there something that's been bothering you?"
"I haven't noticed myself," she said, lying with a precision that scared her. "I just have a lot of my mind right now. I feel lonely.."
''So what?'' Juliet said. ''Why do you tease me about it? Big deal, you morron.''
