Stolen Dreams

I do not own the lyrics "Hunger" by ASP. Nor do I profit from using this song for my chapter titles.

Chapter 2: Stolen Dreams

"Down where I drag the dreams I've stolen..."

"Do you know why the Singer left?" whispered a vocalist who sat crammed with half a dozen other men in a tiny room outside the audition. "Tatsuya-sama... he must have gotten fed up with Kisaki-sama's demands."

"Demands?"

"I hear he is a terrible taskmaster."

Everyone's eyes wandered slowly over each other, wondering who would get the coveted position for Syndrome that afternoon. Each of them had come from indies bands who hadn't managed to leave their garages much less their hometowns. Vocalists knew that Tokyo wasn't the welcoming town that everyone made it out to be - one minute you thought you were doing well - next minute, reality comes a-knocking and you find yourself on the street. Failure was the one-way ticket to desperate living on the street corners - at least, that was what was rumoured.

Or one could return home and find that full-time job that one's father had tried to press on you before you left... Asagi sighed, remembering his old dreams of becoming a doctor.

Yes. There was that.

But this audition was different. This was Kisaki-sama, who they said was the manager of all time - the vocalist taken under his wing would be well taken care of. Only Mana-sama could have greater clout - Mana-sama and his protege, Gackt-sama... Of such stuff, dreams were made.

Asagi felt honoured enough to be there to try out. He wasn't sure if his voice was of any use to someone like Kisaki-sama. Quite a few people found him off putting. It didn't matter how much makeup he put on, what kind of sexy piece of leather he put on (or took off) - Asagi's voice was unique. There was no two ways about it.

Either Kisaki would love it and take him on as vocalist - or he would hate it and Asagi would be politely shown the door.

"Kneel."

That was his response?

Asagi's head jerked up in surprise, eyes wide. His dark eyes searched Kisaki's face for a hint or clue that this was a joke. But the bassist's look was serious. In silence, Asagi - eyes never leaving Kisaki's face - lowered himself to his knees, heart thumping in his chest.

"Well," Kisaki smirked. "At least, he can hear me and obey quickly. Promising."

The vocalist blushed and dropped his eyes to the carpet. Kisaki's boots disappeared as the bassist circled around behind the kneeling man.

"Tall, maybe a bit of foreign blood there..."

The only other spectator - a tall dark-haired man - didn't respond - just stared as Kisaki circled the vocalist again.

"Thin... but that might be because he's poor and unable to eat well..."

Asagi's face became a little pink at the slur, he bit his lip and said nothing.

"But... promising..."

Fingers ran across his shoulder, startling Asagi, and passed through his shoulder length hair, pulling the strands away to reveal a pale neck.

"Kept his colouring pure... Smart..."

The black fingernails continued to travel around, down - and then under Asagi's chin forcing the vocalist to look up at Kisaki.

"Very promising, don't you think, Jun-kun?"

Still no answer.

A forefinger ran across Asagi's lower lip, Asagi's hands trembled. Kisaki smiled and leaned down, stealing a kiss. The vocalist froze - his delicate eyebrows knitted in a slight frown as Kisaki's lips travelled from his mouth and down Asagi's sensitive neck. The manager for Syndrome chuckled as his tongue and teeth elicited a gasp from Asagi.

"Hmmm... very promising..." Kisaki leaned back, watching with obvious delight as the shy vocalist tried to get himself under control. "And I am a man who can spot potential at a hundred paces off..."

He turned away.

"You hired."

Asagi's breath whooshed out, leaving him feeling limp with exhaustion - as if he had just run a mile race. He stayed there, uncertainly, on his knees - wondering if Kisaki would let him rise soon. His feet were becoming numb.

Kisaki turned around and then smiled, held out his hand pulling Asagi to his feet.

"You've passed. You are hired. Jun..."

The silent one nodded and stepped forward.

"I'll see you around... Asagi..." Kisaki smiled and left the room.
