Chapter Twenty
It wasn't Lex's mum on the phone but Rob's.
"Hey mum how are you?" He asked.
"I'm good Rob. And you?" She asked.
"Fantastic. The launch party was incredible and they think that this album may be the one Mum." Rob said in an excited rush.
"Yes I was reading that in the papers here this morning. I am very proud of you Rob." She said.
"Thanks mum." Rob said. He could feel the eyes of Jon, Nikki and Lex on his back, listening to every word.
"So Rob, what's going on between you and Alexandra?" Jan Willimas was not one to beat around the bush with Rob.
"Well...I'm...uhm..we....she's my girlfriend." Rob finally spat out. He turned to see Lex's reaction and she was smiling widely at him. He smiled back and Jon stuck his finger in his throat to pretend he was throwing up.
"I have always liked her. She has spunk." Jan said.
"You have?" Rob asked with wonder.
"Yes. I liked the way she never sucked up to you. I saw her several months ago when I visited Jon's mum. Alexandra has turned into a very beautiful, smart young woman. I hope you are treating her right." Jan said.
"I am Mum." Rob said.
"I hope so. I wouldn't like for this to come between you and Jonny." Jan said.
"I know Mum. This time it's different." He said catching Lex's eye. She looked at him with one eye brow raised, a smile that clearly said she wanted to know what he was saying.
"Is that so? What do you mean? Are you finally going to give me a grand daughter?" Jan teased.
"Mum!"
"What? You don't want to be too old to play with your own kids do you?" She said still teasing him. He knew what she was doing but he couldn't answer those questions with the room filled with people.
"It's way too soon to know." Rob said, hoping they would think he was speaking about the album.
"Well don't drag your heels. Alexandra will get bored of waiting for you." Jan warned with a laugh.
"Don't worry Mum." Rob told her. They chatted about Rob's sister and his nephew for a few more minutes and then they hung up. He turned towards the group.
"She was just asking about the CD." Rob said.
"Yeah." Jon said with a laugh. Lex just blushed and was silent for a change. Rob walked over and stood beside her, rubbing her back.
"I hope that was alright." He asked her.
"What was alright?" She asked.
"Telling my mum you were my girlfriend. You are my girlfriend, right?" He asked.
"Come on Jon." Nikki said standing up and pulling Jon out of the room.
"Wait I want to hear her answer." Jon said trying to pull away from Nikki.
"Jon. Let's go." Nikki said and Jon turned and followed her with a playful pout on his face.
"So?" Rob repeated, turning Lex's chair around so that they were facing each other.
"Do I get to call you my boyfriend?" She teased.
"Yes."
"Okay, I'll be your girlfriend."
"Good." he growled and leaned in to kiss her lips.
"What's different this time?" She asked pulling away from his lips.
"Different? You. Me. Us." He answered.
"This feels different. Scary but good too." She told him.
"You have always scared the shit out of me. But now it's in a way that doesn't make me afraid to open the door or to eat food thats been left out." He teased.
"Be afraid be very afraid." She teased, kissing him again.
Jon and Nikki went home a few days later. The night before he left, Jon pulled Lex aside for a talk.
"Lex, if you don't want to be with him anymore, tell him. He's a great guy and when he gives his heart, he gives it full out. I've seen he cares about you. More than I have ever seen him with another woman, I know he won't do wrong by you." Jon said.
"I care about him Jon. I always have. I won't do anything to hurt him. I'm in love with him." Lex told him.
"Does Rob know?" Jon asked. She shook her head.
"It's too soon." She said.
"Yeah, but don't wait to long to say it to him." Jon said giving her a hug.
"I love you Jonny even though you are a big jerk sometimes." She said.
"I love you too Lex. Even though you are a spoiled brat." He replied.
"Call me if you neeed anything or to talk. Whatever." Jon said as he pulled away.
"I can handle it. I'm a grown up now." She said in her best little girl voice. Jon just laughed and grabbed her in a head lock.
