Chapter 21

'Alan?' Beth called after him, her voice rising in panic. No response.

'Oh god....' Beth thought. She had convinced herself he would tell her its all OK, that of course he would stand by her her, Steve or no Steve. Or she had hoped he would.

Beth put her hands over her face and took a deep sigh, breathing slowly to stop the tears that she knew were ready to fall as soon as she allowed them to.

Beth heard music playing quietly from the stereo in the lounge as Alan came into the room, took her hand and pulled her to her feet. Without looking at her he walked her into the lounge.

Beth gasped. 'Oh....'

The room was gently lit with candles, a fire starting to burn in the grate.

Alan lead Beth onto the white rug in front of the fire and pulled her close to him as Avril Lavigne's voice gently played in the background. The feel of his body pressed close against her made her gasp. He felt very firm and strong and she allowed herself to lean against him.

'You are more beautiful than I thought.'

He gazed at her, cupping her face in his hands and bending, kissing her softly.

'You have been through the most distressing experience and tonight....'

He sighed, gently smiling at her.

'Tonight.... all you have thought about is how it will affect me in the future. I have never met anyone like you Beth.... so selfless, so giving. Not just with me, but with everyone you meet. You are the most special person I have ever met....'

He kissed her deeply and held her close to him.

'And...if you need me to answer your question.... I don't want to end this before we go too far. I'm there already Beth, to be honest. I have loved you for a long time...'

He gazed down at her as tears welled in her eyes and she smiled slowly.

'And as for Steve.... '

His eyes darkened as he saw her face tauten as the sound of his name.

'Why don't we just cross that bridge when we come to it, OK? He wont be out for a while and I want us to enjoy this, while we can. If it comes to it, I will hire private protection...I can afford it and nothing is too much for you...for...us. I promise...everything will be OK.'

'Oh Alan...' Beth sobbed 'Thank you....' She put her face onto his chest as tears of joy and relief fell from her.

'Beth....' Alan spoke with a husky voice as he tipped her chin to him.

'You can thank me later....'
