Part 21

Ben:

I wasn’t really ready for this. But, nevertheless, I knocked on the door to my parent’s house loudly. My sister answered the door, took one look at my face then slammed it shut. I rolled my eyes as I reached to open the door and stepped inside the house.

“Thanks, Becks! Nice welcome home, that was.” I turned to a confused looking Danny and gestured him into the house. As soon as I turned around, my mum flung her arms around me and she was kissing me on the head.

“I’m. So. Glad. You’re. Back!” she said between planting the sloppiest kisses ever all over my face. She then turned to Becks and wiggled her finger at her patronizingly. “Don’t slam the door on your brother and make him feel unwelcome. You haven’t seen him in ages, show him some respect.”

“Yeah, Becks,” I said and my mum turned on me next, smacking me lightly on the shoulder and saying “Don’t you start.”

Another round of sloppy kisses from mum, and a hug from Becks, then mum turned to Danny.

“Hello, Danny. I’m glad I’ve finally got to meet you. I’m Sarah, this is Becks.” She gestured towards Becks who nodded her head and said hi.  Danny smiled and said hi to both of them.

We went into the living room where my dad was sat on glued to the laptop screen with earphones in. That explains why he didn’t greet us at the door with Becks and mum. My mum went up to my dad and ripped the earphones out of his ears none-too-gently. My dad looked up at my mum in shock.

“What’d you do that for?” my dad asked.

Mum flicked her chin in my direction and said “Our son’s dropped by to say hello.” My dad’s eyes flicked to me and he beamed straight away.

“Ben!” He stood up, flinging the laptop on the sofa and hugged me. “It’s good to see you, son!” He turned to Danny. “You alright, Danny? Long-time no see.”

“Yeah, I’m alright. You?” Dad responded with a nod. He’d met Danny once before. I can’t remember when. We were all so drunk.

My Dad turned towards the kitchen and shouted “Becks, get the beers will you?” My sister walked in holding five open beer bottles.

“Already one step ahead of you, dad.” She handed one to each of us and we all sat down having a good natter. My family seemed happy enough to see me again. Hopefully I wouldn’t ruin it like what had happened at Danny’s by telling them the news.
