Chapter Twenty Two

However, she didn't look angry or upset. In fact, she almost looked amused.

"Am I intruding?" she asked, laughing as she glanced back and forth between us.

"You didn't intrude- -" I began.

"It's fine," Simon said at the same time.

I shot him a confused look, shocked at the lack of...what was lacking here? Seriousness? I didn't know. Maybe those drinks were getting to me after all.

"Simon," she cooed as she weaved her arm through his, lightly rubbing her fingers on his forearm. "I've got a headache, so I went ahead and called the limo. It's probably time to go home anyway, don't you think?" she asked, looking at him expectantly.

I couldn't keep my eyes off of her hand, resting on his arm possessively, like she had something to prove.

Still, I couldn't blame her. I'd be insecure too if I were her.

Except...she didn't look like she was insecure. She actually looked extremely in control.

"You're probably right, love," he agreed, checking his watch.

Suddenly I felt like the third wheel. I looked around desperately for someone else to talk to or a quick getaway.

I shifted my weight uncomfortably, searching the crowd for Ryan or Randy.

I spotted Randy and took a step forward, opening my mouth to excuse myself, but something stopped me.

"So, will I see you at Ryan's?" Simon asked as he wrapped his arm tightly around my neck, pulling me close.

"Ryan's? I asked, rotating around to look up at him. "I haven't heard anything."

I glanced quickly over his shoulder, spotting Terri laughing heartily with Nigel.

"Apparently he's having an 'after-after party' at his house. Something about trying out a new hot tub?" he said.

"Oh well, sure. That sounds like fun," I responded, focusing back on him. "If ET is done with me I'll probably head out there soon."

"Good," he said with a smirk.

Something was behind that mischievous expression of his. Something he was hiding. Something he was planning. Something I couldn't quite put my finger on.

"Good," I echoed, giggling.

We stared each other for a long moment.

Not speaking.

We didn't have to.

It was like a connection; you couldn't explain it.

But it was there.

It was always there.

My eyes traveled down to his lips. Oh, what I would give to kiss him again.

Deeply.

Thoroughly.

Not like the one on the dance floor.

It had only left me craving more.

"Okay, well I'm leaving now," he told me, breaking the moment. "I have to take Terri and her headache home, and then I will see you there," he said, kissing me softly on the side of the mouth. I tilted my face upwards, closing my eyes and breathing him in.

"See you there," I echoed after a moment, opening my eyes.

He brushed my cheek with his thumb softly, giving me a soft smile, and then he was gone, Terri trailing behind him as he said his good-byes.

"Tonight's the night," I whispered to myself, my eyes following Simon until he disappeared from my sight.
