Chapter 22

Chapter 22

It took them almost an hour to move their supplies from the van to the Josephine, they decided to keep the keys to the van in the ignition and to park it close by in case anyone else ever needed it and closed the gate to the marina with some rope at the top, a person could reach it but a zombie could not, since they didn't appear to possess any fine motor skills. Then Josie and Brad grabbed the clothes from outside the management office door and they all boarded the Josephine. It was beautiful inside, nicer then any of them outside of Rob, Josie and Pompey had ever been on, Dark wood paneling with cream coloured leather furniture, a full kitchen area that was called the galley, a master bedroom and guest stateroom with their own washrooms and showers as well as another stateroom with twin beds. There was another washroom with a shower and laundry facilities, a TV and DVD player.

“And I forgot my Blockbuster card.” Rob said when he found them.

Later they all sat on the upper deck by the helm and watched as Brody turned the key and felt the engine come to life, a slight vibration going through the boat, while Brad and Rob removed the mooring lines that held them to the dock

“I've never done this before.” He told them.

“Just go slowly Brody.” Grace told him. He nodded and slowly backed it out of the dock, turning it toward the open ocean and out of the harbor.

“Once we are just off shore I am going to anchor the boat and we can get adjusted and try the radio. “

It took him longer then he would have liked, to figure out how to drop the anchor but once he did he began to feel more comfortable. He decided to spend his time reading the manual to the yacht and learning more about it.

They split up the staterooms, giving Grace and Renee the master one, wanting Grace to be as comfortable as possible, Josie and Jodie shared the guest stateroom and Brody, Pompey, Rob and Brad would share the room with the twin beds as necessary, since it was decided that there must always be two people awake to monitor the radio and keep watch for other boats, ships or planes. During the day the ones who had been up at night could sleep in the nicer rooms since they wouldn't be in use. They split up the clothes between them and after having quick showers they all gratefully changed into the first clean clothes they had worn in days. Renee took all their dirty clothes, some of them blood stained and put them in the washing machine to soak. Josie put away the food supplies, while Brody and Brad put away the guns, locking them into a storage unit to keep anyone from getting injured by mistake, letting them all know where the key would be hidden. Brody thought there would be a good chance of other people like them fleeing in large boats and willing to steal other peoples supplies. He wanted everyone to know where the guns were to defend The Josephine. Rob and Pompey found a few fishing rods and tackle and they all brightened up at the thought of fresh fish. Once they were settled Brody taught them all how to use the radio and how to read their position, in case they were able to contact someone. Then they decided to stay where they were for a few days while Brody became more comfortable with the boat before they made any decisions about heading to Europe.

“We can pretend it's a holiday.” Renee said to Rob later as they sat staring at the water, it was getting later and the sun was starting to set.

“Yeah. A holiday away from the flesh eating monsters that have probably killed everyone I know.” Rob said lighting a cigarette.

“You know those will kill you one of these days.” She told him.

“If I'm lucky.” Rob replied seriously.
