Zombie **COMPLETED**
Chapter 23
Chapter 23
A few days became a week, with Brody and all the others taking short turns at the helm to all get a feel for the boat. None of them were navigators and that's what gave Brody pause to actually start out for Europe, but he knew they would need to go soon, before they had to go back on land for supplies or the weather turned. They had a group meeting and decided they would leave the next day and basically head East, with a slight Northerly direction. They knew Europe was that way and they would eventually find it, if all went well. It was scary to go out alone across the open ocean with no one really sure of what they were doing but the thought of staying where they were was far more frightening.
Grace even morbidly joked that even if they ended up adrift and ran out of food, they had plenty of ammo to kill themselves with. Everyone laughed but most were considering it a viable way out if things got any worse. No one wanted to get eaten by those things or worse...turned into one.
It hadn't taken long for Renee and Rob to stay up during the nights to keep watch and then sleeping during for most of the day. They were both night owls and were happy to let the others sleep. They were able to spend the nights talking or taking turns reading to each other from one of the few books they had discovered on board.
That night after the meeting, when the others had gone to bed Rob and Renee were fairly quiet and contemplative.
“What do you think our chances really are?” He asked her, breaking the silence.
“Slim to none.” She answered truthfully.
“That's what I figured. I hate not knowing what is happening out there.” He pointed to the land that lay to his right. “Or in the rest of the world.”
“I know. Two weeks ago, I would have been thinking about calling in sick for work and spending the day at the beach, or at home watching movies or surfing the web. I miss my cellphone.”
“I know. I miss my Ipod. What else do you miss?” He asked
“Hamburgers.”
“Red Bull”
“Frozen Mochaccinos.”
“Oh I'd kill for a double espresso.”
“Reality TV.” She stated.
“Football.” He added.
“Sex.” She said. He looked at her at this answer.
“Sex?” He repeated.
“You know the act of fornication?” She joked.
“Oh I know it alright. Did you have a boyfriend?” He asked her.
“No. But this whole situation certainly cut's down on my options though doesn't it?” She asked looking at him. They hadn't kissed since the day in the airport restaurant but there had been heavy flirting and many occasions of their legs or arms brushing and he had given her a hug a few times. They were both interested in each other but it seemed like there was always someone around, no real chance for kissing or anything more. And neither took their watch time casually, so other then mild flirting there would be no making out during that time.
“Well, there is a very handsome, charming, brave and caring man on board this very boat.” He told her.
“I know...but don't you think Brody is a bit old for me?” She teased.
“Well aren't you the comedian?”
“Oh did you have someone else in mind?” She feigned innocence.
“Yeah...me.” He said a bit shyly. Never really that confident in his real life, Rob had come to the conclusion that if these zombies spread, that his reputation, talent and fame meant nothing anymore. He wouldn't even be able to rely on those to impress Renee. He was terrified she would find him lacking.
“So you want to be my boyfriend?” She asked smiling. He nodded returning her smile.
“Just my luck.” She said blowing out an annoyed breath.
“What is?” Rob asked confused.
“I finally get a boyfriend who is rich and has a mansion and it is in the middle of Zombie central.” She teased. Rob laughed with her and took her hand and placed a kiss on it.
“So that's a yes?”
“That's a yes.” She replied.
