Chapter Tewnty-Four
Rob sat in the waiting room while the police questioned Lex about the man who had beaten her. He couldn't sit still and was pacing the room when the cops came out to talk to him.
"She's not being co-operative. She either doesn't want to piss off her pimp or her dealer or she really doesn't remember. We were wondering if you could talk to her. Maybe she would be more willing to let us know what happened." One of them said to Rob.
"Pimp? She's been.....?" Rob asked in horror.
"She didn't say she was turning tricks but she has no job and no money. she has to be feeding her habit some how." the cop said sympathetically. Rob fought back the tears and nodded.
"I'll see what I can do." Rob said and shook their hands and went to Lex's room. He knocked on the door and heard her say come in.
"Hey, How are you feeling?" He asked gently.
"Like shit. " She answered. She had a pronounced lisp because of the missing teeth. She had a wild look in her eyes that Rob knew all too well. She needed a fix and was getting antsy. If she didn't run off she would be in severe pain as her body de-toxed. He was hoping that she would talk to him and praying she would agree to rehab.
"Yeah, getting kicked in the face will do that to you." He said sitting on the bed beside her. "So what happened?"
"I don't remember." She told him, not meeting his eyes.
"You told me on the phone, that he was supposed to give you a fix if you did it. I assume you did what he asked for, what happened then?" He asked gently, trying to let her know he didn't care if she was fucking for drugs. Although it was killing him, he couldn't stop thinking about his sweet Lexi and how they had made love for the first time, the way she had felt like he was worthy of her and now it was like that Lex was gone. He hoped that there was still a bit of her left inside, the strong part.
"Yeah, I did. But then when he tried to leave, I grabbed his arms and told him to give me my stuff. He just laughed and punched me. Then he kicked me. I must have passed out and he left. When I woke up and saw all the blood, you were the first person I thought of. I'm sorry to have dragged you into this."
"Lexi, do you know who he was? His name?" Rob asked.
"No. I met him at a party. He said he could hook me up if I....well he said he could hook me up." She said, a blush creeping onto her cheeks.
"Lex. Do you want help? I can get you into rehab. Your family is really worried about you. Jon is flying out to see you." Rob told her.
"Jonny's coming here? Oh no." She groaned and covered her face.
"Lex, it's okay. He's family. He'll understand." Rob tried to relax her.
"I don't want him to see me like this. It's bad enough you have....please Rob, don't let him come here." She begged.
"It's okay Lex. Relax. What about the rehab? I know Jon's going to want to talk to you about that."
"I don't know." She told him.
"Well maybe you should think about it. Are you happy like this?" He asked her. She shook her head.
"No." She said.
"You don't have to live like this. I know Lex. I know it seems so hard and is so scary, that you feel like you are going to fail. But it can be done. I am proof, but you have to want it Lexi." She was quiet, not answering him.
"Rob can you stay here? I don't want to be here by myself, it hurts. Please don't leave..
"I won't go anywhere Lex." Rob told her, taking the chair beside her bed and sitting in it.
"So tell me what I missed while I was....gone." She asked. He filled her in on everything he knew about her family, his family and about his career.
"I saw you on TV. I was so proud of you. I told everyone there that we used to be friends but they didn't believe me. I'm not sure if I believed me." She said with a sad laugh.
"We are still friends Lex." Rob told her.
"How? How can you even look at me? After the things I said and did. I must make you sick." She said, tears beginning to flow down her cheeks again.
"Lex, you don't have to worry..."
"But I do. Do you know the week before you came back from Europe I cheated on you? I was so fucked up I fucked Nick, he's the one who gave me my first hit. Now I am here and he has my old job. That fucking bastard."
Rob was shocked to hear that she had fucked someone while they were still together but he tried his best not to show it.
"Lex we all do things we are ashamed of when we are stoned." He tried to comfort her.
"I wish that's all I had to be ashamed of. I have given strange men blow jobs, fucked the filthiest homeless men. Just for a line. I make myself sick. I can only imagine how you feel." She rolled away from him, crying into her pillow. He fought down his own tears and laid beside her, putting his arm around her.
"You don't know how I feel. Stop putting thoughts into my head. I already told you, I am not leaving and I will help you."
Through the night Lex was screaming in pain, crying, begging for someone to help her. The doctors couldn't give her anything for the pain, she had to get it all out of her system. Rob held her, wiped her forehead with a cold cloth and whispered comforting words, while she cursed him and shouted insults. When she finally fell asleep, he sat in the chair and drifted off himself.
When he woke up she was gone. He went to the nurses station and told them Lex had left and then went to pay for her bill. Back at his house he laid on the bed he first made love to her in and cried.
