Chapter 25

Chapter 25

As soon as the doctors pronounced them safe enough to board the Aleutian, they were transferred over to her, a crew from the Aleutian removed all their supplies, including the guns and brought them to the ship as well. They met with the Captain and his first officer where they were told that North America and South America were considered no longer salvageable.

“What does that mean? What about all the people?” Renee asked.

“Any people who didn't get out within the first 72 hours are considered gone. We have several ships patrolling the coastline just in case some survivors like you are found but there haven't been many. The casualties from this are massive, estimates are putting it in the area of 2/3's of the U.S. Higher in Canada and in the South and Central American countries nearly 100%.” The captain told them.

“So what happens? The last thing we heard was that they were going to drop nukes on Los Angeles, will they do that?” Brady asked.

“There hasn't been any decision made yet. We know the creatures can be killed, but we don't know how long they can exist without eating. I can't see the remaining U.S. Officials agreeing to nukes being dropped, it's too wide spread and like I said it's all over the two continents...too late for nukes to be effective.”

“What about the rest of the world? No zombies there?” Rob asked, worried about his family.

“No, as soon as the outbreak was known, they held all new arrivals in quarantined areas. There hasn't been one case. Although there are rumors of few planes crashing, supposedly an infected person got on board and it spread.”

“Thank God.” Rob whispered.

They were fed and showed to their quarters, all of them having to share cabins since there were limited free bunks. They were then allowed to make satellite calls to Europe. Only Rob, Pompey and Josie had friends or family to contact and there were tears all around as they finally got to speak to their loved ones. They had been feared lost to the zombies and a memorial service was already being planned for Rob as well as many other U.S. Based Britons. Rob's mum was nearly incoherent as she cried with tears of joy.

“I'll see you soon Mum. I love you.” Rob told her. He ended the call and allowed Pompey his turn, moving to take Renee into his arms.

“I really thought I would never see or talk to her again.” He said, a new batch of tears bursting forth. The horror, fear, sadness and resignation to death finally coming to the surface, he had stuffed it down so that he could survive but now he couldn't hold it in.

“We're safe Rob. It's alright.” She said as she stroked his back.
