Chapter Twenty-Six
Rob checked his mail and saw there was a letter from Lex, she was due to get out of rehab in a few days and he was so excited to see her again. He wanted to have a long talk, clear the air and start over again. Go to thearapy with her, whatever she needed. He walked through the house, opening the letter as he went along.
"Dear Rob,
I hope you are well. I just wanted to thank you again for all your help. I really believe that if it wasn't for you I would still be using or perhaps even dead. But as I write this I am torn. You see, I really wanted to talk with you and see if we could have a second chance. I was never so happy as I was during my time with you. But I am not sure I can look at you again. I don't think I can ever forgive myself so how can I expect you to forgive me. You are a fantastic man who deserves much better than me. I just wanted to ask you not to come with Jon to pick me up on Thursday. I think it is better if you just forget about me. Thank you for loving me and being my friend.
Love Lex.
He stared at the words, not really comprehending them. Was she saying they would never be together again? That she didn't want to see him? He was confused, she said she loved him but that she didn't want to see him. He felt himself getting angry.
"So she can just say we're through and that's that?" He said angrilly to himself. He had a thought to just go there on Thursday whether she liked it or not but immediately squashed that idea. She didn't need him showing up and demand she talk to him. It would be to stressful and could push her over the edge, he couldn't risk her going back to using. Her sobriety was the most important thing and he would be willing to be without her if that's what she needed to stay clean. He went into his office and put the letter in his safe with the other letter she had sent. Then he sat in his chair. He couldn't really muster any tears, even though he felt like he should. He had cried so many tears when she had left him the first time.
"Maybe this is for the best. Maybe I can move on and be happy." He said aloud.
Lex saw Jon waiting in the brightly decorated waiting room. He saw her coming towards him and smiled so large she wondered if it hurt and then he grabbed her into a tight embrace.
"Oh Lex, I am so glad to see you."
"Me too Jonny. Me too." She hugged him back just as hard. She signed the last of the papers and hugged a few staff members. Thanking them for their help and care. And then she followed Jon to his car. She felt so scared, now that she was without constant supervision, would she slip? She knew there was no shame in slipping and that she had to take it one day at a time and not look to far ahead into the future but she couldn't help herself from worrying. And she had that little voice whispering to her, telling her she had made the wrong choice with Rob. She had secretly wished he would still come to pick her up, maybe declare his undying love. But the more sensible part of her told her she had lost that forever and he was probably grateful to be rid of her. They were quiet on the way back to the hotel where they would stay for a day and then fly back to the UK in the morning, Jon wasn't sure what to say and Lex was just enjoying the sights of the cars and the buildings rolling by.
"Your Mum and Dad are really excited to see you." He finally said.
"Me too. Mum always makes me feel so safe." Lex said sadly, thinking of the hurt she had caused her family.
"They've already forgiven you Lex. Don't worry about that. It's going to be alright." He said pating her arm. Lex just stared out the window and nodded. Tomorrow she would leave LA and Rob and get on with her life. This was for the best she told herself.
