chapter Twenty-Eight
"Lex, I just wanted to let you know Rob is coming here later tonight. I'll be with him for several days. If you need to get in touch with me use my cell." Jon's voice sounded nervous, like he wanted to say more but wasn't sure how or what to say. Lex, erased the message and went into the kitchen to put away the groceries she had picked up. Rob was going to be here in London. The thought filled her with overwhelming excitement and dread. Just the thought of being in the same city as him was comforting, he could be anywhere, walk right past her on the street. And that sacred her.
"He must hate me." She said to herself. How could he have anything but disgust for her? She had whore'd for drugs, cheated on him, lied to him and then left without anything but a letter. She regretted that choice but she could never make herself call him to apologize. And then she had met Gary and told herself she was doing the right thing, moving on with her life. She put the last of the groceries away and walked into her bedroom. She opened her closet door and pulled a shoebox down from the shelf. Inside were all of Rob's CDs and the Rolling Stone with them together inside. She opened it up to the page, it was the only one she ever looked at and the pages opened easilly, she didn't even have to look for it anymore. She touched the page, wishing she was really touching his face. She missed him, his laugh his voice. She had tried to love Gary but her heart wouldn't let him in, it told her brain that there wasn't room for anyone but Rob.
"I've got to get him out of there." She said absently rubbing the spot over her heart.
"I don't know Jon. Do you think this is a good idea?" Rob asked nervously biting his nail. They were sitting in Jon's SUV outside of Jon's mum's.
"Sure it will. It's just for a minute and I have to see her, it's her birthday." Jon told Rob.
"I could just wait here." Rob wasn't feeling comfortable with seeing Jon's mum. He was worried she would blame him for Lex's problems or that she would talk about how happy Lexi was. He didn't think he could bear to hear if she had a lover.
"Half an hour I promise. Just to drop off her present and then we'll go." Jon told him.
"Fine. Let's get this over with. But you better have my back."
"Rob, you know she loves you. No one blames you."
"Okay. It just feels weird. To be here at this house, there's a lot of memories." Rob said. Jon knew he meant Lex memories, this is where Lex preformed most of her pranks on Rob when she was a girl.
"Oh Robert. You look gorgeous." Jon's mum said hugging him and kissing his cheek.
"Thanks." He mumbled. She made him feel at home she always had, she really was like a second mother to him. He was glad that he and Jon were able to stay friends. He didn't have many real people he could trust and he would have hated to lose Jonny. She insisted they have some tea and put out some biscuits, fussing over the two of them. She squealed over Jon's present, which was a weekend at a luxurious spa.
"You'll love it Mum, there's mud baths, massages, facials, body wraps, the whole works. You'll be a different woman when you leave." He said as her doorbell rang.
"That'll be the paper boy. Jon would you pay him please." She said holding out some money.
"I got to pee. Rob you do it please." Jon said running to the toilet. Rob laughed and said.
"I'll pay. Be right back." He opened the door and found a very shocked Lex holding an enourmous potted plant and a gift bag.
Lexi?" Rob whispered the word.
"Rob." Was all she could say as she stared at him. He looked beautiful, his hair was neat and tidy, his skin flawless, a pair of jeans that clung to his hips and a tshirt the showed his well formed muscles. And his eyes, were even more incredible then she remembered. She looked him over drinking him in, knowing she would never get to see him again, cherishing this chance meeting.
"Lexi....you look.." He was cut off by Jon bounding up to them.
"Lex! What are you doing here?" He said nervously looking between the two of them."
"Just dropping of a present for your mum. I'll just leave it with you and give her a call later." She said handing the things to him but never taking her eyes off of Rob.
"No wait...stay. We'll go." Rob said.
"I don't want to intrude." She replied.
"Never. We had to be leaving soon anyway. I'll just go say goodbye." They watched him go back into the sitting room to say bye and Jon hissed.
"What are you doing here?"
"I already told you. Why didn't you say you were coming here?" She asked.
"It was spur of the moment. I'm sorry Lex. Are you okay? You look a bit pale." Jon said rubbing her shoulder.
"I'm just a bit shocked. He looks really good. He must be really happy. I'm glad he's got someone to love." She said. Jon didn't tell her that Rob didn't love Cecile, he didn't know what he should say so he just nodded.
"I'll say bye to Mum too." She followed him in and watched him kiss her cheek and tell her he would call later.
"Bye Lex." Jon said, trying to get Rob out of there quickly.
"Bye Jonny. Bye Rob."
"Bye Lexi." Rob said taking a last look at her and leaving. She fought back tears and put on a bright smile before turning to her aunt.
"Happy Birthday!" She said cheerfully.
Jon watched Cecile and Rob across the table from him and felt his stomach turn. It wasn't supposed to be like this, Rob should be happy.
"For God's sake Rob, with all the money you have you would think that you would have learnt some table manners." Cecile said loudly, people from other tables heard and looked towards them. Rob turned red but didn't reply.
"So Nikki, thats a gorgeous watch. Is that from Cartier?" Cecile asked Nikki.
"Yes, Jon gave it to me for Christmas." Nikki said beaming at Jon.
"It's really nice. All those diamonds. Must have set you back at least $5000." Cecile said.
"Uhm..." Jon didn't know what to say. He was embarassed that she would talk about the price of a gift.
"Robbie got me this from Harry Winston. It was almost $20, 000." She said touching her necklace.
"It's beautiful." Jon said politely. Nikki nodded her head and held Jon's hand, knowing he was hurting for Rob. Feeling a bit scared for him herself. How had he managed to find such a gold digger? Rob was always too smart for those kinds of women. Nikki decided then to talk to Jon and see if there was anyway they could convince Rob to at least pospone the wedding if not call it off all together. Something needed to be done.
"Robbie while we are here I want to go to Harrods. I've always wanted to shop there." Cecile said putting her hand on Rob's arm. He just nodded and stared off into space. He would buy her anything because he just wanted her to stop talking to him. She looked so fake and ugly when he thought of Lex and how she had looked. Her brown hair was pulled back into a low pony tail, Cecile's was teased into a huge blonde pillow. Lexi had worn just a bit of lip gloss and Cecile had her usual bright red stuff on, along with a thick coating of foundation and enough mascara to blind Tammy Faye Baker. Lex had smelled like violets and Cecile smelled like hairspray and too much perfume. Why did he have to see Lex? It was killing him to have been so close to her and not get to touch her. He wished for the first time in a very long time for a drink. Glad that he had Jon to support him, to keep him strong.
