Chapter 28
Beth’s mobile phone rang as she was carrying the last box into the house. Putting the box down she answered it.
‘Hi Laura.’ Beth felt nauseous as she listened to the familiar tone on the end of the phone. ‘Ok, yes…thanks anyway Laura. Bye’
Beth rubbed a hand over her eyes. She had been prepared for the worst but knowing Steve would be out in 6 months left her feeling weak. At least Mum will be safe…. and Alan. A sad tear trickled down her cheek and she rubbed it away angrily. She had cried solidly for two days after leaving Alan’s flat and she had to just get on with things now. No point dwelling on what might have been. It had been her choice, after all.
‘You alright Beth?’ A tall dark-haired man appeared at the door holding two mugs of coffee.
‘Sorry, Ben. Yes, I’m fine. This is the last box. ‘ She smiled at him. He seemed nice and she was glad to be sharing the house with someone else.
Beth walked into the house and into her large room. The Victorian villa was split into 5 bed-sits with a shared kitchen and bathroom. Beth didn’t really care. It was somewhere to sleep.
Dumping the box on her bed, she walked into the kitchen and joined Ben at the dining table.
‘Sometimes, you just need chocolate.’ He smiled at her and offered her a chocolate digestive from the open pack in front of him.
Beth bit her lip and two huge tears fell as she stared at the packet. ‘No…thanks.’ She shook her head.
‘I’m sorry, Beth. Did I say something?’ Ben’s dark eyes were concerned.
Beth smiled and laughed.’ I’m being a bit silly… Just come out of a relationship, actually. Chocolate digestives were a bit of a feature!’
‘Oh shit Beth, I’m sorry.’ He lifted the biscuits and put them back on the shelf.
‘No, Ben, really, it’s fine! I have to live with it, it was my decision anyway. But, I don’t want to talk about it, if that’s ok?’ She smiled warmly at him.
‘No problem!’ he smiled. He thought she was lovely and was very glad she was single.
