 Life Goes On(Pt27)

Evelyn slumped in the kitchen chair and sighed heavily. Another long day for her and it wasn’t over yet. She still had to clean up the dinner dishes from when she and Alex ate around 6. Thank goodness he was finally asleep. He wanted to argue with her that it was still early and he had to finish reading the book to grandpa. No amount of talking and even bribery would change his mind. Evelyn relented and let him finish.

Alex has a stubborn streak in him like Joe…and his mother.

Nick and Amber left a few nights ago see a doctor of the Community, that might be able to help Joe. This episode was in its eleventh day, longer than any of the previous ones. With Joe not responding, he wasn’t eating or sleeping. His eyes were dull green and sunken, you can count each rib in his chest, his stomach concaved. On the eighth night Nick sat with him, probed his mind with no resistance from Joe. He found what he feared. His roar of anger tore through the house. Amber and Evelyn came running into the room to see him almost violently shaking Joe. Together they pulled him away and Amber dragged him to the other side of the room. While Evelyn settled Joe back in the bed, Amber scolded Nick for what he did.

“He’s dying, can’t you see that.” Nick hissed back at her.

    “No…I don’t believe you.”

“He is…I saw it. Joe has given up on living.”

”Nick…he’s my father.” Tears sprang to her eyes. “Isn’t there something you can do, someone you know that can help him?”

“I don’t know…maybe.” Nick ran his hands threw his hair.

“Then we have to leave immediately.” Amber pulled herself together, rushed over to Joe and kissed him. Then went upstairs to pack a bag for them. Nick paced a few minutes getting himself under control, then called to ready the plane. Evelyn insisted they leave Alex to help her here while they were gone. And she would call the others and let them know what was happening and tell them to come right away.

“Heck with the dishes.” Evelyn huffed after playing over that night in her mind. She rose from the chair and gathered what she needed, taking the items upstairs with her. Sitting on the edge of the bed she wrung out the warm water from the washcloth. She wiped it over Joe's face and neck. Dipping the cloth again, she proceeded to his shoulders and chest. Talking softly to him the entire time. She did his arms next, rubbing the back of his hand to her cheek, kissing it before doing the other arm. Evelyn moved down to his legs and washed them. She struggled a bit turning him over to do his back. Once she had finished bathing him, Evelyn covered him with the thin sheet. Leaning over Joe, kissing his lips, she pulled back and stared in his eye. The empty, haunting look there sent shivers up her spine.

Evelyn rose and took the basin of water to dump out in the bathroom. She splashed cool water on her own face and went back downstairs and poured herself a glass of wine to help her relax. Taking it back upstairs with her to their room. Looking up just as she entered the room and stopped dead in her tracks. The glass fell from hand, bouncing on the carpet, spilling its contents.

Sav was standing two feet from Joe. His hands shoved deep in his pocket, an undecided look on his face. When he finally did move, Evelyn though he was going to bolt from the room. But instead he stepped over to the bed and sat down. He leaned over Joe and caressed his face. Sav slipped his hand under him and gathered Joe to his chest. He sat up slowly and began to rock back and forth. Sav opened his mind and joined with him. A strangled cry escaped his throat, pulling him tighter against his chest, Sav lye his head on his shoulder, crying softly.

After awhile he stood up, he didn’t even acknowledge Evelyn’s presents as he kicked of his shoes and shirt, then climbed into bed with Joe, pulling his frail, thin body against him. He wouldn’t sleep or leave his side until he could pull Joe from his deep despair.
