Chapter 29

Alan felt like he had lost his right arm. The flat was empty and soulless and he made a conscious effort to spend as little time there as possible, accepting invitations to attend charity events, seeing his friends.

Not many people were aware he had been with Beth and those that did know had expected it to fizzle out soon enough, believing Beth to be a rebound from Rima. He didn't put them right and anyway, there was no reason to now.

For the first time in his career he had negotiated a day off from filming because he was feeling too emotional and couldn't concentrate. He went home saying he felt ill and drank a bottle of wine while watching 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' through his tears. The following day he gave himself a good pep talk and resolved to just get on with it.

Now and again he spoke to Beth on the 'phone. Their conversations would be light, chatty and forced. Neither of then could say what they really wanted to say and weekly calls became monthly and subsequently less painful.

Alan threw himself into work and so did Beth. Alan was ticking off the days to Steve's release on his kitchen calendar, he needed to know. He didn't know that Beth was doing the same.

Alan was still Patron of Rainbow House and he still carried out his obligatory duties. Kate felt a slight pang of guilt when she first saw him.
He looked totally bereft, dark circles under his eyes and not as cheerful as he would usually be. She had talked to him about various fundraisers and they had arranged various functions where his presence would be of benefit. Kate could see he found being there, and knowing that Beth wasn't, very difficult.

The day of Steve's release came and Alan called Beth on her mobile. She didn't answer so he left a message.

'Beth, it's me.. Alan. Just called to see if you're OK, I know today is difficult for you. Call me if you want to talk.'

Beth was sitting on a bench at the end of the Pier. She ignored his call because tears were streaming down her face and fear was gripping her stomach.

Beth knew that Steve was out. She knew it was just a matter of time.
