There's a Fine, Fine Line - An Avenue Q Fic
I love you.
Nicholas lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. He closed his eyes in an attempt to recall the night before. He thought that he could remember coming back to the apartment but everything after the bar was extremely hazy. With a groan, he rolled onto his side and involuntarily put his arm around the body sleeping beside him.
The next second, Nicky’s eyes shot open and he sat up. He was finally aware that he was in bed - and naked - with his best friend. Rod woke at Nicky’s sudden movement and he looked up at him. Nicky met his stare with an expression of bewilderment. “Rod did we- did we…”
Pulling himself into a sitting position while holding the blanket over his bare torso, Rod shook his head. “Don’t worry; we didn’t do anything except kiss. Well… you did manage to get all of our clothes off but that’s all…” His gaze stayed on his hands, too ashamed to meet Nicky’s eyes again.
“Oh my god… Rod, I’m so sorry.” He replied, timidly placing one hand on Rod’s shoulder. He could feel Rod tense up at his touch. “Listen, I drank a lot last night and I barely remember anything so let’s just forget that this even happened, ok buddy?” He said after a moment, trying to give him an apologetic smile.
Rod had already felt on edge before so he now immediately went into his defensive mode, “No, that doesn’t sound ‘ok’!” He jerked his shoulder away from Nicky’s grasp and shot him a fierce look. “Is this funny to you or something?! Oh, why not get drunk and mess around with your gay friend and make him feel even worse that he’s in love with yo-” Rod cut himself off too late and could feel his face burn with embarrassment.
Nicky sat there stunned. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously with one hand. It wasn’t news to him that Rod was in love with him, he’d heard him talking in his sleep many times, but he’d never heard him admit it while conscious. “Rod…I really didn’t mean to hurt you last night. I just…”
Rod swung his legs over the side of the bed, quickly trying to leave, but Nicky grabbed his arm. “Rod, wait! I apologize all right? Don’t just ignore me! I care about you a lot buddy and I think I should tell you something.”
The still aggravated blue man turned to counter but when he opened his mouth it was instantly covered with a kiss. Nicky was still holding Rod’s arm as he gently but firmly used his other hand to pull the back of Rod’s head towards his own. He kissed him clumsily with his eyes open, trying to read his friend’s reaction. Rod's shock wore off almost immediately and he pulled his lips from Nicky’s.
“Why are you doing this?” Rod said, his voice wavering. “Look I don’t need your pity… It will only make things worse. I agree with you- let’s just forget that anything hap-”
Nicky cut him off with another kiss, this time pulling him into an embrace by wrapping his arms around him. Nicky ended the kiss and looked into his bewildered roommate’s eyes, “I’m doing this because I want to Rod. I’ve had feelings for you for a while now. That’s what I wanted to tell you. I ‘am’ sorry about last night but now you can understand why I would act that way when I was drunk.”
Rod stared back at his friend and could tell that he wasn’t lying. “Oh Nicky...” He replied quietly, feeling close to tears. “I love you so much.” He leaned forward and met Nicky in a long kiss.
