You're All I Have
Adie parked at her house and discovered Billie sitting at her back door.
“What are you doing here?” She sat down near him at the top of the dirty stairs.
“Waiting for you.”
“You have a key, why didn’t you come inside?”
“I don’t know”
“Billie, are you okay?”
He suddenly burst into tear with no warning as if someone flipped a switch in his mind:
“It’s over, Adie! It’s fucking over!”
She pulled him into a hug: “I’m sorry”
They set there for about 5 minutes without movement, except for the shaking that Billie’s tears caused. Then Billie slowly raised his eyes to look at his best friend: “Can I stay with you until Mike moves out?”
“Of course you can stay with me. For as long as you want.”
They got up and entered the house. Billie took a glass and began filling it with water when he heard Adie’s scream: “Fucking shit!”
Billie’s eyes widened – Adie doesn’t usually swear like that, unless she’s really surprised or something. Billie turned around and saw her staring at her shirt. She was wearing one of those shirts that change color when they get wet.
“Look at this shit!” – she pointed at the stains from Billie’s tears. It looked like an abstract drawing of a melting Statue of Liberty. “Your creativity is everywhere, Armstrong!”
Billie produced a muffled snort and then began laughing louder and louder uncontrollably. Adie stared at him dumbfounded for a few seconds but his laughter was so contagious that soon she was laughing her ass of with him. The adrenalin from the stress was fighting its way out. Billie had to hold on to the counter to prevent himself from falling.
“It’s not even funny, Bill!”
That seemed to give it another push and they started laughing even harder.
After a few minutes of this insanity they finally stopped and caught their breath. Billie walked over to Adrienne and pulled her into a grateful hug:
“I love you so much, Adie. What would I do without you?”
“Probably stain someone else’s t-shirt”
“Nah, it wouldn’t be that much fun…”
At 3 am Adie woke up and saw Billie standing by her bed.
“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t sleep…alone”
She pulled up the blanket and Billie crawled into her bed:
“I’m so scared. What am I gonna do now”
“It’s not the end of your life, Bill. You’ll find someone else, someone who will love you”
“I don’t know. I’m so used to having him around, I’m not sure I can even imagine myself with someone else.”
“It takes time.” She hugged him from the back feeling him shaking slightly. “Billie, I have to tell you something about Mike” She could feel her voice shaking.
“It’s okay. I know he’s in love with Tre”
Adie’s eyebrows rose:
“He told you?”
“No, I guessed”
“Oh” Is he clairvoyant or something?
Billie turned around and looked into Adie’s eyes:
“Don’t ever leave me, okay?”
“I won’t, I promise.”
“You’re all I have now, Adie” He failed to fight back a sob “You’re all I have”
