Chapter Three

"No." Rob said.

"I was in the gun club at College, won the marksmanship award 3 years in a row." Renee answered.

"Good, Rob take out that, big silver one, you just have to point and shoot with that one. It'll blow a big hole in whatever it's pointed at. Just don't point it at me or Renee. Renee you chose from the rest."

"Ok." Rob said holding the gun Brody said to take. It felt heavy, scary and yet it made him feel a bit safer too.

"Which one?" Brody asked her.

"The yellow one, with the white fence, the pretty garden." As Brody slowed down in front of Renee's grandma's house. The pretty garden was a mess, the flowers were torn and laying on the lawn and there were holes in the ground. The door was wide open, like a dark gaping mouth, no signs of life evident. Renee stared at the open door, panic gripping her heart, finally she unbuckled her seat belt and Rob grabbed her shoulder, stopping her for a second.

"Maybe you should stay here, me and Brody could go in." He said. He was worried that her Grandma could be dead, that wasn't something she should see.

"I'm going." She stated.

"Yeah but we need someone who can drive waiting here. I can't drive and I can't shoot a gun. So I need Brody to go with me." Rob said with what he hoped was a steady rational voice, he felt like his heart was going to explode from his chest.

"Fuck!" She swore, looking at the door and then back at Brody.

"He's right Renee, you need to stay here." Brody told her. She nodded.

"Okay. It's a bungalow, one floor plus a basement. Grandma's hip is bad, she won't be in the basement. Her name is Grace. Please, find her." Fran said fighting down tears.

"We will." Rob said then he looked at Brody and opened the door, clutching his gun he got out. There was no noise on the street at all except for the car's engine running. They made their way quickly to the door, pausing to listen for any noise inside. They went in, Brody first, Rob behind him, praying no one would come up behind him. The hallway entrance had more flowers strewn about, the coffee table in the living room was knocked over and there was shattered glass all over the floor.

"Grace? Are you here? We are friends of Renee's, she's outside in the car waiting for you." Brody called out. Rob heard a noise behind him, coming from the living room they had just passed. It sounded like a cat hissing. He froze and turned around quickly in time to see an elderly woman in a flowered house coat running at him, her neck had a huge tear in it, her eyes were like black pools. Her hands were out stretched out like claws, her mouth contorted into a silent scream. There was no time to shoot her, she was on top of him too quickly. He lost his footing from the momentum she had and she was on him, snapping away at him with her teeth, close up he could see her skin was gray with purple and black veins close to the surface of her skin. He held her away from himself as much as he could, avoiding her mouth each time. She was much stronger than she looked, in fact for a frail old looking woman she was about to win their wrestling match. Suddenly she was lifted off him and thrown into the wall, she landed in a pile and was instantly back on her feet, moving towards Rob once more, he could see dirt and blood under her fingernails and was sure he was about to die. He heard a click and watched her head explode; Brody had saved his life.

"Holy fuck!" He gasped, he needed Brody to help him stand after that.

"Good job, Kid. She almost had you but you kept her off long enough for me to grab a hold."

"Thanks Brody, I wouldn't have been able to keep her off me for much longer. I guess that was Grace. What do we tell Renee?" Rob asked, staring at the still twitching body, blood pouring out of it's neck and fighting down nausea.

"We tell her the truth. Better to know then to wonder what happened." Brody said. Rob nodded and they started to head out toward the front door, when there was the sound of a door opening behind them. They both spun around, guns ready to shoot an attacker. The basement door opened and a head of white hair popped out.

"Did you get her?" A woman's voice asked.

"Grace?" Rob questioned.

"Yes, did you get her?" She asked again.

"It's safe you can come out." Brody told her. She opened the door all the way and stepped out, she was holding a meat cleaver and a toilet plunger.

"Poor old May." She said looking at the dead woman. "I watched through the window. She came out to see what all the screaming was about. The mailman bit her neck. I wanted to go and help her but, they were attacking everything that moved. I closed the curtains and watched the TV, they said to stay inside, barricade yourself in. I was just making my way into the basement, when someone started pounding on the door. The front door broke just a second before the basement door, closed. It's was too sturdy for her to get through. I almost opened the door to help May, but I remembered her eyes and I knew she wasn't alive.

"We need to get going, Renee is waiting in the car, it's not safe to be there too long." Brody said to her. Grace nodded and took Rob's outstretched arm, dropping her plunger but keeping her cleaver.

Renee was behind the wheel of the car, taking furtive glances at the door of her Grandma's house, while watching the street to make sure no one was approaching. When she heard the shot, she hung her head and let a few tears slide down her cheeks. Her Grandma was the last relative she had left. Now she was alone. She sniffed back her runny nose as she recalled baking cookies at Christmas in her Grandma's kitchen. She had always felt so happy and safe there. She looked down the street, making sure no one was heading for them when there was a knock on the window of the passenger side door. She jumped and saw Brody, there, she hit the power locks and let them in, Brody didn't get in though, opened the back door and helped someone into the back seat. Renee was frozen as she watched her Grandma climb in.

"Grandma!"

"Oh, Renee, I am so glad you are alright. I was worried sick."

"How? I heard a shot, I thought you were...dead." Renee said a fresh batch of tears flowing.

"It was May, from across the street, dear." Grace told Renee as Rob climbed in beside her.
