Ville could barely contain his excitement as the plane touched down in Ontario Airport the week after Christmas.
He and Davey had spent hours talking about this mysterious person who could grant them all their wish to be human again. Roxy was going to freak right out. It was everything she'd ever wanted. She could finally have that family she'd always desired, even though she'd never said anything. Ville could grow old with Davey. They could be a couple of wrinkled old farts moldering away in a huge house together, getting yelled at by the doctors for breaking a hip during sex. And they would be able to laugh about it with Roxy and Jade as they came to visit with their herd of children and grandchildren, while Ville and Frank argued about the current state of music and threw weak punches at each other.
With a shake of his head to clear away the fantasy, Ville jumped up and half dragged Davey out of the plane and down the escalators, running to the baggage claim, "Come on!"
Davey laughed, "Why do we have to rush?" he snagged his bag off the carousel, "Roxy's not going anywhere. Another four seconds is not going to matter."
"Can't wait." Ville said, scanning for his bag, "Do you think she'll go for it?" he finally saw his suitcase and grabbed it, pulling Davey toward the entrance, "I mean, you and me, we're going no matter what she decides. But I want her too." Outside, Roxy was nowhere to be seen so Ville sat down and lit a cigarette. He fidgeted with the bench and pulled on his tattered gloves, adjusting his beanie over his hair, "That woman is never on time for anything."
"She'll be here." Davey sighed and leaned on Ville when the other man started to play with his hair, pulling on the long black parts in the front.
Heralded by blaring Dropkick Murphys, Roxy arrived with a screech of tires. She turned down the volume of the stereo in the Crown Vic and hopped out, "Hey boys! How was the flight?"
Ville stood and ran up to her, hugging her hard and spinning her in a circle, "Get in the car. I've got something to tell you!"
She gave Davey a questioning look and he waved her into the car, "Okay..."
"Where's Jade?" Ville asked, noticing he wasn't in the car and instead Frank was in the passenger seat. He threw his suitcase in the trunk and chucked Davey's in as well before getting in the backseat.
"Locked himself away in the studio." she smiled, "He's got some kind of massive inspiration and couldn't be pried out of the room." she eyed them in the review mirror before pulling out into traffic and cutting off a large SUV, "How did that room become the studio anyway? It went from Jungle Suite to Jungle Studio before I knew what happened."
Ville shrugged, "You're not using it so shut the hell up."
She grinned at him, "So what's the big news?"
"I’ll tell you when we get ho. Jade's got to hear it too."
"You to going to stop having such loud sex?" Frank asked, twisting in his seat to look at Ville.
Ville flipped him off, "Did I ever tell you about the time we fucked in your bed Frankie?" he asked sweetly.
Frank's jaw dropped and his eyes narrowed, "You're fucking lying."
"I don't know." Ville laid his head on Davey's shoulder, "Love, am I lying?"
Davey's blush gave them away.
"You fucker!" Frank tried to crawl into the back seat.
"Stop! I will send this car off the bridge! Do you have any idea how much car wrecks hurt?" Roxy yelled, shoving Frank down into his seat.
"I'm going to kick the shit out of you when we get home." Frank mumbled, slouching in his seat and staring out the window, watching the cracked asphalt of the I-10 roll by.
"You're going to try." Ville smirked.
Roxy shook her head and cut off a guy in a 1929 Roadster, earning an angry honk and the finger from the driver, "So how was it?"
Ville shuddered, "Mr. Merchand is a terrifying person without the whole leader of the vampire hunting group thrown in."
Davey smacked Ville's shoulder, "He's not that bad!"
"Says you. You try being your boyfriend and having that man frown at you for a week." Ville stuck his tongue out.
A look of utter confusion crossed the sharp features of Davey's face for a minute as he tried to work out that statement.
"I couldn't have done it." Roxy said with a cringe.
"What's this? Big bad Roxy may be scared of something?" Frank leered at her.
"Do you want me to run this car off the road?" she looked at him sideways.
"Yes. I would love to break my neck and all my spine meats." Frank rolled his eyes.
"Well then shut the fuck up ok?"
It wasn't long before Roxy pulled the car into the driveway of the house the five of them shared in the college town of Claremont. Their two-story house was in between a sorority and an aging hippie couple, both of whom had flourishing pot gardens on the roofs. It was a large house with a wraparound porch and columns in the font, big bay windows, mature willows in the front concealing most of the house and yard from the street.
The eccentric little town was the perfect place for a clan of vampires to live as they were certainly not the weirdest people in the neighborhood. Their comings and goings went largely unnoticed. Except for a few months before when a crazy vampire named Pete had decided to try and kill them all, and Ville specifically, so he could have Davey. They had killed him eventually, but not before he nearly killed Jade and turned Davey into a vampire. Davey turned Jade to save him and now they were one big happy family.
Mostly.
As soon as Ville got out of the car, Frank pounced on him, wrestling him to the ground as they exchanged blows.
"Don't fucking have sex in my fucking boat you asshole!" Frank shouted, punctuating each word with a punch to the chest.
Roxy and Davey rolled their eyes and went in the house, too used to the two men fighting to even pay any attention to it anymore.
By the time Ville and Frank limped into the house covered in dirt and blood, Roxy, Davey and Jade were sitting in the living room on a brand new deep purple couch talking about Davey's family.
"So what were you all excited about when I picked you up?" Roxy asked, "Don't you dare sit on my couch with your filthy asses!" she yelled as Frank moved to sit on the arm.
"I wasn't going to!" Frank pouted, plopping down on the floor.
Ville paced in front of the couch, "Davey's father said that he heard a rumor of a vampire who was leading people to a witch or something who could turn us all in humans!" he blurted without preamble.
Three heads turned to Davey for confirmation, and then back to Ville when he nodded.
"Where?" Roxy demanded.
"Down in Venice Beach!" Ville hopped up and down, wishing he could smoke in the house.
"You're kidding?" Frank asked, shaking his head, "That fucking close?"
"Nope. That's the rumor." Ville grinned, "What do you think Roxy? Worth a try?"
She nodded slowly, clutching Jade's hand, "I don't see what we have to lose."
"Well, what's this vampire's name?" Jade asked, ignoring the pain of Roxy almost breaking all the bones in his hand.
"Bert. Bert McCracken." Ville said.
Frank's jaw dropped, "You're fucking shitting me."
"No." Ville said slowly, "Why is that such a surprise?"
"Bert's my fucking maker."
