Was It Worth It?

Sorry for the wait on

Mikey sobbed harder as Gerard’s body continued to convulse in pain. “Gee...no...” It was at this moment that Gerard’s body stilled. Mikey looked slightly hopeful, then he realised that Gerard’s chest was no longer rising and falling as it had been erratically just moments before. “Gerard? class=GramE>God. No.” Mikey glanced towards where I had been stood but as the soul been collected I had disappeared from his visual field. “No! Bring him back! NO!!”
I sighed, looking towards the light shimmering beside me which then took form as Gerard. He gasped slightly when he became fully formed, a hand to his chest, trying to get used to the lack of pain. “I feel really light-headed.”
“Don’t worry.” I reassured him. “It’ll pass.” I then saw something I’d never seen before, Gerard’s form flickered, like a bad picture on a TV screen. It was only for a moment then he was fully formed again. “What the...?” Then hit happened again. Gerard looked as confused as me. We both turned our heads to see Mikey bent over his brother, hands on his chest. He was resuscitating him.
“No, Mikey.” Gerard tried to go towards his younger sibling as he started compressions on his chest once again. “He can’t hear you.” I said quietly. Gerard flickered again. Mikey had pressed his lips to his brother’s, putting oxygen back into his lungs. “This shouldn’t be happening; resuscitation after the soul has been taken is...impossible...” Gerard was staring at me then suddenly he disappeared from view. class=GramE>“Gerard?!”
I heard a gasp, struggling for breath. I glanced to the side. Gerard was breathing!
Mikey was overjoyed, tears welling in his eyes once again as he pressed his fingers to his brother’s neck feeling the pulse beating beneath the soft flesh. Mikey pulled out his phone and dialled 911. The phone still in hand Mikey manoeuvred Gerard’s head on to his knees. “Don’t worry Gerard. Help’s on the way.” He stroked a hand over his brother’s forehead. “Thank you.” He whispered to the seemingly empty room, though I wasn’t sure I’d done anything in the first place.

I stood watching as Gerard was loaded into the back of the ambulance. Mikey with him every step of the way. Then a pain in my hit struck me and my knees partially buckled. I immediately knew what it was, the bosses needed to see me, this was their ‘friendly’ way of getting my attention. I closed my eyes, feeling everything pressing in around me again as I transported.
“What happened?” asked a booming voice in the darkness of the near pitch black, circular room.
“I...I don’t know...”
“You don’t know...?” asked another.
“Yes...everything was fine. Gerard’s soul was with me, we were ready to continue but then his brother...he...resuscitated him...”
“Don’t try our patience!!” The last of the three voices spoke. “Resuscitation doesn’t work, you know that!”
“I know but for some reason it did. I don’t know why or how. I’ve never seen anything like it...”
“You’re still responsible! Do you realise what could happen if we don’t act soon?! Chaos!!”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing! Get out of our sight! We will call on you if we need you!” I took a shuddering breath. They were seriously pissed but I just couldn’t see what I’d done wrong...but it was out of my hands now...
End Flashback
So that brings us to the beginning of this story. In the dark alley I was sitting in, watching life pass me by. All charges taken from me and no real reason to keep living except for the fact that I wasn’t really living in the first place...then again I wasn’t really dead either but that’s another matter.
Then something hit me...they said that this was a disaster like it had never happened before but what about out of body experiences in hospitals...we’ve all heard of them...could it be that the people are actually being taken as spirits and then being resuscitated...there was only one way to find out...I would have to visit an old friend...
I looked to my right and saw a homeless person down from me. He was staring at me in petrified fear. I find the homeless to be very intuitive to death’s presence so I just shook my head at him. “Not today.” I said, before walking out of the alley, my long, black coat flapping in the wind.
Okay, so it’s short update but I thought something was better than nothing...let me know what you think and any ideas would be great cause I’m not sure where to take the plot from here...thanks for everything. Slayya
