Chapter Thirty-One
Lex stared at Rob, unsure of what to do. She couldn't get out of the house and she was close to freaking out. She couldn't be trapped in here with Rob, it would be too difficult. But what could she do? Lock herself in the bathroom? That seemed a bit over the top to her. Rob got bored of waiting for her answer and turned back to the pan and began to put the food onto a platter. His hands were shaking and he hoped she didn't notice it. She stayed over by the door and watched him carry the food out to the dining room, then come back in and get the rolls and bring those out too. Then he sat at the table and began to cut up the roast. Lex stayed in the kitchen, wanting desperatley to go and sit with him and feel just for a moment like things were they way they used to be.
"Come on Lex. This is great." She didn't answer and bit her lip.
"Lexi?" He called out again. She closed her eyes, hearing him call her that felt so right. She wiped a tear and jumped when she felt his hand on her arm.
"Don't cry Lexi. Just come and eat. That's all." He said softly. Pulling her arm. She relented and sat down, let him pile some food onto her plate and then just stared at it. Rob poured her a glass of water and then sat down and began to eat again.
"You should eat before it gets cold." He told her. She nodded and picked up her knife and fork and began to cut the meat. She took a small bite and barely tasted it as she chewed.
"Look Lex. If you are uncomfortable I'll go into another room." Rob offered. He wasn't sure what to say to her, she looked miserable, close to tears and he didn't know what to do. He wanted to talk to her to ask her if she still loved him but he was too scared. What if she said she didn't love him? That would be worse than not knowing. So he stuffed some more food in his mouth and waited for her answer.
"No stay. I'm alright." She lied. She gave him a smile that he knew was fake and took another bite. They ate quietly, not talking but stealing quick glimpses of each other across the table. Rob finished eating and sat and stared at his plate. He noticed Lex was almost done too. She took a drink of her water and then took her plate into the kitchen and put it in the sink. He followed her in and put his in the sink as well. After an awkward silence Rob finally thought of something to say.
"So how long do you think they'll keep us here?" He asked.
"I don't know. Jon must be crazy to think this would work." She said.
"What would work? Why did he do this?" Rob asked.
"He must be trying to get us back together. Does he think I'll just rip off my clothes and jump you?" She said. Rob visualized that and it didn't seem like a bad idea to him.
"Would that be so bad?" Rob asked. She was stunned by that sentance for a moment.
"It's too late for that." She said turning away from him.
"Why is it too late? Because you say it is. Well that's not good enough. What about me?" Rob asked his voice getting louder.
"What about you?" She asked feeling the familiar fire burning in her stomach.
"You didn't give me an option. You just left."
"There can't be a couple with only one person Rob. I had to leave."
"No! You took the easy way out. You were a coward and instead of facing up to your actions and giving us a second chance, you ran away. And left me." He accused. All the anger and confusion from the last year coming back to him and escaping.
"I had to leave. I couldn't stay there and let you see what I had become. I didn't deserve you then and I still don't now. I did what was best for both of us." She told him, her eyes flashing with anger.
"You are so fucking stubborn. Why do you have to be so pig headed? You made up your mind and didn't even try to see if we could work it out!" He was shouting now.
"I wasn't being stubborn I was acting like a grown up. I made an adult decision which it is obvious you still can't do." She shouted back.
"So now you are saying I'm immature?"
"Well if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then you must be a fucking duck." She said to him. Rob stepped towards her and grabbed her arms in his hands.
"Lex. I love you. I haven't stopped. I don't care what you did. I never have." He said looking into her eyes.
"How can you not care?" She asked, tears springing to her eyes.
"Because I love you. I'll forgive you anything." She stared at him, she was crying openly now.
"How?" Was all she could say. He leaned in and kissed her, pressing her up agaisnt the cabinets behind her. She was in his arms and it felt so right.
"Lexi, don't you feel it?" He asked moving his mouth along her face to her neck. Running his hands along her arms and back.
"Oh God...Rob..I" She couldn't talk, didn't have words to say.
"Shhhh. Let me show you I still love you." He begged her, whispering the words against her ear. She nodded and he led her into the living room and stood her by the couch. He kissed her and touched her everywhere through her clothes, feeling like he had died and gone to heaven, he was touching her again. he pulled his shirt off over his head and she did the same. They both kicked their shoes off and pulled their pants down, frantically. After more than a year of being without each other they needed it so badly. She laid down on the couch and he entered her, she was already ready and moaning his name as he started. She cried out his name and pulled a handful of his hair as she came, he followed a moment later groaning into her neck. Then they laid there together, still joined. He lifted his head and looked at her.
"Lexi, please come back to L.A. with me. Or we can live here, anywhere you want. Just be with me please." He asked her, he had tears in his eyes.
"I'm never leaving you again." she said hugging him close. At that moment the front door opened and Jon walked in. He saw them naked on the couch and turned away with a laugh.
"Just like old times." He said smiling widely.
