Chapter 33

The police and ambulance arrived at the scene within 5 minutes. It took them another 20 minutes to get into the vehicle, a Fire Crew arriving with cutting equipment to free the occupants.

It was early evening and a small crowd gathered to watch.

The man sat in the police car, his eyes staring unbelieving at the scene in front of him. He knew the wrecked car and he knew its owner.

The police had used Beth’s phone to trace her. The Detective at the police station had told him they would catch up with them before her knew it.

‘We’ll find her, don’t you worry Sir’ He had been cheery, red-faced, and ignorant.

A flurry of activity at the back of the ambulance attracted his attention as the crowd parted; a body bag and its contents were wheeled past and lifted into the back.

The man collapsed onto dashboard, inconsolable, his body wracked with sobs. He didn’t notice another ambulance behind the first and another occupant being loaded into it.

The car door opened and a Police Officer bent down to speak to the man, removing his hat respectfully. He spoke quietly to the man, who nodded, unable to speak. He silently followed the Police Officer and climbed into the back of the ambulance before they both sedately pulled away.

One month later

There was movement and the sound of a machine beeping. Beth tried opening her eyes but the light hurt, so she kept them shut. She couldn’t feel her limbs. She was aware of voices, a female and a deeper male one. It seduced its way into her brain, triggering a memory of a kind face with hazel eyes.

Beth mumbled and moved her head slowly towards the sounds of the voices. The owners of the voices became animated and started calling her name.

Slowly Beth opened her eyes, squinting painfully.

‘Alan?’ she whispered through her cracked, dry lips.

‘Oh my God…’ She heard the female voice say, followed by muffled sobs.

Alan moved closer to the side of the bed. His face swam in front of her as her eyes started to focus.

‘Hey…’ she whispered.
‘Hey…’ He smiled, tears coursing down his face. He turned and allowed the woman closer to the bed.

‘Hello darling…’ Alice smiled at her daughter.

‘Hi Mum….’ Beth smiled back weakly.

There was a rush of feet as nurses came running into the room, checking Beth’s observations, removing bits of equipment.

Alan and Alice stood outside the room, watching through the window.
