Part 04

“Hey Benj, what you…” Tony’s greeting failed him as he leapt over the back of the bench, cigarette dangling from his lip. “Ok, wrong twin skipping class and what the fuck happened to you Joel?”
Joel shrugged and plucked the cigarette from Tony’s mouth, taking a deep drag before exhaling, blowing blue smoke into the air. He sighed at the feel of Tony’s arm slipping around his shoulders, leaning back against his friend, fresh tears slipping down his face, smearing the blood from his nose down his chin. He sniffed and wiped his face with his sleeve.

“Ok, so number 1, you’re smoking. You don’t smoke. Number 2, you’re skipping class. You don’t skip. Number 3, what the fuck happened?”

“I decided to hit Benij’s fist with my face,” Joel replied quietly.

“Ah.”

“Yeah.” Joel took another drag from the cigarette and coughed lightly. He glared at Tony when he laughed and took it back.

“You gonna be ok?” Tony asked, dropping the cigarette to the floor and crushing it with his foot. “You want my mom to take a look at that?” He asked, gesturing to Joel’s face.

Joel shook his head. “No. I’m fine, Tony. Really.”

“Remind me not to see you on a bad day,” Tony shot back dryly. “What happened Joel?” He asked, tone softer.

“Benji found out about me and Billy. He saw us making out”

“Oh. Fuck!”

“Yeah.”

“You sure you’re gonna be ok?” Tony slid off the bench and crouched down in front of Joel, his hands resting on his friends knees.

Joel forced a smile. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.”

Tony scowled, unconvinced. “Ok. So, what you wanna do on your first ever day of skipping school?”

“Uhmm... Don’t know.” Joel’s smile was less forced this time.

“Ok, how about we get you cleaned up then we go up the hospital and see Paul - he could probably do with a friendly face. Although, not sure if yours really counts as too friendly right now.”

“Oi!” Joel laughed and punched Tony lightly on the shoulder. “We could do that,” he agreed. “But… I normally meet Billy after school and walk home with him,” he blushed lightly, eyes dropping to his feet.

“And you still can,” Tony smiled reassuringly. “That’s not for hours yet and Paul still gets tired easily. We can get to the hospital, see Paul and still get you back in time to walk Billy home from school, ok?”

“Yeah, ok.” Joel nodded, wiping his face with his sleeve again.

“What else is wrong, Joel?” Tony asked, sitting down next to him again. “Hey, I’m sorry. Don’t cry,” Tony bit down on his lower lip, worrying his lip ring when fresh tears flooded Joel’s eyes

“I’m sorry,” he sniffed, not bothering to hide his tears or wipe them away as they streaked down his cheeks. “Tony, what happens if something happens to Billy? What if… what if Benji does something or or… Or what if that gang get him like they got Paul?”

‘And what if they get you?’ He thought. Sighing, Tony pulled Joel into an awkward hug. “I… I don’t know,” he admitted. “I guess you’re just gonna have to be extra careful.”

Joel nodded and pulled away, embarrassed. “Yeah, I guess. I just…” He shrugged and ran his hands over his face. “So fucking emo,” he muttered, squaring his shoulders.

“You’re allowed to be emo, considering the circumstances.”

“True.” Joel agreed. He took a deep breath. “Come on, lets get up the hospital and see Paul.” He stood up, grabbing Tony’s hand and pulling him up.

Tony nodded and pulled another cigarette from the packet in his pocket. Lighting up, he offered one to Joel, who screwed his face up and decline, reassuring Tony that, for the time being at least, he was OK.
