She Had To Get Out

It had been a couple days since the ‘incident’; Mike hadn’t spoken one word to Katie. She hadn’t left the house, resorting each day to waking up, making a coffee, crawling back into bed, curling up and crying herself to sleep again.
She hadn’t a clue what to do, she was a 25-year-old married woman, some would say she had the whole world ahead of her. But she was married; the only reason she was still with mike was because of the sanctity of marriage, which she had deemed so important. For two years she had thought she could make it work between them.
A knocking on the front door a woke her from her not so peaceful sleep. She slowly crept downstairs. Quietly she looked into the peep whole on her front door. It was Billie. Her heart beat quickened as panic rose inside of her, she didn’t want to see him, she didn’t wish to speak to him. But now he was outside waiting for her tio open. He knocked on the door a little bit more forcefully the next time, showing his growing impatience. ‘Katie I know your in there! Open up!’
‘Fuck,’ she cursed under breath
‘I just want to talk! Please!’
She opened the door, probably looking an absolute mess in her pyjamas and knotted bed hair he still managed a compliment, ‘your looking lovely today’ he smiled at her.
‘Don’t lie what do you want,’ she said flatly
‘Same thing you do’ He replied almost before she could finish. He pushed his way past her into the lounge, pausing for a moment as their bodies connected. The gorgeous smell of his aftershave lingered in her nostrils, but she forced herself not to fall into temptation.
‘If Mike finds you here he’ll kill us both,’ she said in the same monotonous tone.
‘I wouldn’t let him touch you. Kate I need you…’ He said as a tear ran down her cheek
‘No you don’t! It was a fantasy Billie, it didn’t mean anything! It was one crazy moment in time that probably should have never happened.’ She said trying to sound convincing to him and herself.
‘You don’t mean that,’ he was beginning to get tearful now. He stepped forward and caught her crimson lips for a few seconds before she pushed him away.
‘Get out.’ He looked at her sadly, ‘I said GET OUT!’ she almost screamed.
As he slowly walked to the front door, head hung low, neither of them notices his worn leather wallet lightly fall out of his trouser pockets and land neatly onto the front room carpet.
‘I suppose I’ll be seeing you,’ he whispered when he left.
She felt her heart breaking and hoped it was for the best.

Later that night it had begun to rain, Katie always saw rain as a sign that something bad was to come. After she had taken a bath, which had done nothing to relax her, she heard Mike come in. She put on some clothes and decided she would try her best to make amends and show him that if they both changed then their marriage could work.

She entered their kitchen where he was getting a beer from the fridge, ‘Hey,’ she spoke first.
He didn’t even acknowledge her existence.
‘Listen Mike I really want us to work, what happened with Billie was a mistake, it should have never of happened,’ she saw him flinch with anger on hearing Billie’s name, ‘everyone’s allowed one mistake right?’ He didn’t answer.
‘Please Mike!’ she pleaded.
‘Give me time’ he whispered and left the room. There was still hope she thought to herself.
She followed Mike only a few seconds later, he was bent down studying something on the floor. He quickly shot up. ‘He’s been here!’ he shouted
‘What?’ she responded with confusion.
‘You’ve fucked him again haven’t you!’
‘Mike I don’t know what your saying!?’
‘He was here and you screwed him!’ He began to clap patronisingly, ‘Well done Katie and Billie Joe the worst secret lovers ever? Not very good at covering things up are we!’ he said as he through something at her. The object dropped to the floor, she studied it realising it was a wallet belonging to Billie Joe.
‘Mike this isn’t what it looks like, I can explain!’ she begged.
‘You fucking whore!’ he pushed her so that she fell to the ground, her head banged against the wall and she cradled it with her hands. He picked her up from the neck of her t-shirt and by grabbing a handful of her hair, her delicate face grimaced as the pain rocked her body. He shook her violently several times, ‘WHY?’ he screamed over and over until it was ringing repetitively in her ears.
‘I didn’t…’ she tried but failed to get the words out, he shook her one last time before slamming her against the wall and walking into the kitchen. She folded down onto the floor. She had to get out.

She gathered herself together, trying to forget the excruciating pain she was now suffering. She walked out into the rain with only the clothes she was wearing.
