Freudian Slip

“I’m sorry I told you to go back to 80.” Mike broke the silence, but just barely. He spoke in a whisper and the welling tears made it hard to say anything at all.

“No! You shouldn’t be sorry. I’m the one who should be apologizing. I’m so sorry I said her name! I don’t even know why I did it!”

“I do! Christ Billie you JUST left your wife, you haven’t even had time to process it, and I’m pushing you to move on. You even told me to stop!”

“No, no. It just came out. Mike. I’m so sorry! Please don’t be mad at me.”

Both men sat in the dark huddled and sniffling to restrain the tears trying to escape. Then the silence came again. After a while the whimpering and sniffles stopped.

Billie had shifted an inch or two away from mike in shame and they were no longer touching. Mike was fidgeting with the cold glass bottle he held between his palms.

Mike set the bottle down between his knees. He raised his strong arm and felt for Billie. He wrapped his arm around him and pulled Billie in to his chest. Billie went numb and fell where Mike led him. Mike wrapped both arms around Billie and they both stopped fighting their tears.

Billie’s fists unclenched on Mike’s heaving chest and they clung for a long while.

“I love you.” Mike said. “And take all the time you need. I’ll be right here”

“I love you too.” Billie whispered. “…Thank you.”
