Chapter Four
On the drive to Rob's house the passed several car accidents, dead bodies on the streets, a few people chased their car but Brody was able to avoid them. At Rob's house there was a guard inside the gate, he had his gun drawn and when he saw Rob's car he came down and asked to see everybody in the car first.
"There's a lot of fucked up shit going on and I am not letting anyone in til I know you are all alright." After confirming it was safe he opened the gate and Brody drove in. The gate was locked up tight and they all got out.
"Who else is here?" Rob asked the guard.
"Hank, Nancy, Pompey got here a few minutes ago with Josie. She's a wreck. One of them got her husband."
"Oh fuck." Rob said softly, heading for the house to see to Josie. Brody talked for a bit longer to the guard, who's name was Brad, asking details about the house and the property. He was assured there was a 12 foot electric fence surrounding the property, that was checked daily for any holes. It had been checked earlier in the day and had passed inspection. Brody nodded and took one of the guards walkie talkies.
"We'll keep in touch this way. We don't know how bad this is going to get and how long power and phone lines will be up. We have to make some sort of plan to get out of here, I don't like being this close to the city."
"I've seen a few of them, they've been running up and down the street all day, I ducked out of sight when they come, I don't want them to see this house has any activity." Brad told him.
"Good thinking. Let me know if anything happens."
"Will do."
Rob motioned for Renee and Grace to follow him inside. As soon as he got in he called out.
"Hello? Anyone?"
"Oh God Rob." Josie cried from the games room and came running out to him, her face a red swollen mess of tears, and flung herself into his arms. "Lee's dead."
"Oh Josie. I'm so sorry." He comforted her, rubbing her back.
"It was horrible. We walking to our car on our way to meet you after that interview and suddenly this woman jumped on Lee. She bit his shoulder and I tried to pull her off and then she bit his neck and blood...the blood...was everywhere and he was screaming and I couldn't get her off of him and then she started to chew on his neck. He screamed at me to run and get the police. I looked around for help and I saw that other people were being attacked and I didn't know what to do. And then Lee stopped screaming and I knew he was dead. I was frozen there, I couldn't leave him. I had to get him away. And the woman, she started tearing into his stomach and I saw his...oh God. It was horrible. Then Lee made a noise and sat up. His eyes were black and they were looking at me. I ran then. I ran to the car and left him...." She was almost collapsing and while he held her up Rob felt his blood run cold. He looked at Brody and then at Renee. This was some seriously fucked up shit and they had to figure out a way to stay safe til the police or the army took care of this.
"He came back? Like them?" Renee finally broke the silence. "How is that possible?"
"It's like May. I saw them kill her and then she was pounding on my door." Grace added.
"We need to get out of here. Somewhere safe." Renee said, panic setting in.
"No we stay here for the time being. The fence surrounding the property is electric, strong and high. We need to figure out a plan before we try to get out of here." Brody said.
"Yeah we're safe here." Pompey added, recognizing in Brody the confidence of someone that served in the Military.
"For how long though?" Rob asked. And no one could answer him.
