Chapter Four

4.

Nigel sat on his toilet in the huge bathroom of his hotel room. His nose was swollen and it still oozed a little blood, Howard had hit him hard and a splitting headache started to come up.

He lit a cigarette with shaking hands. He was angry, mad as hell to say the least. He had felt attacked when he had seen his own PA getting too close to his precious possession. He knew perfectly well that he didn’t own any of the guys from Take That, but it did feel a little like that. And today, he’d lost all of them.

Julia wasn’t the kind of girl who frequently had one night stands, so she did find it a little strange that after some snogging she felt like ripping all his clothes off and jumping Howard. Maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was the adrenaline she’d felt after the row with Nigel, or maybe it was the way his lips moved over her body and his hands trailed her spine which made her shiver, she didn’t know nor cared. All she wanted was for him never to stop.

Robbie looked at the pen in his hands. And then at the blank paper before him. It was midnight and he couldn’t sleep so he thought he’d write some songs, or at least, try to write some songs. His room lay scattered with ripped and crumbled up papers, the ashtray before him was filled with cigarette buds. He cursed when once again nothing was forming from the words he’d scribbled down. He felt like crying, when Gary had done this it seemed so easy but now it seemed like a mission impossible.

He turned of the lights and threw his pen, paper and ashtray on the floor. His mother would kill him tomorrow for fucking up the carpet but he could care less. He closed his eyes and forced himself to sleep.

It was loads of hours later when Robbie finally drifted into an uncomfortable sleep.

***

Gary and Dawn were crawled into bed. Gary listened to the steady breathing of Dawn and looked at the ceiling. He worried, he wanted to continue singing but doubted his relation with Nigel. He didn’t feel like working with him anymore, Nigel was too controlling. It was as if after tonight all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. He had known before that working with Nigel might cause trouble and problems at some point, but now it was here it seemed very confronting. He sighed and turned to Dawn, she was so beautiful. He never felt this strongly about anyone ever in his life and he nearly felt emotional when Dawn turned in her sleep to search his warmth and cuddle into his arms.

***

Mark and Jason had one last glass of wine in Mark’s room. They discussed Nigel, Nigel’s behaviour and their futures. Mark and Jay were both worriers. Jason maybe a little more than Mark. Mark had a small idea about making his own kind of music but was hesitant to talk about this with anyone else, especially with Gary he just felt shy and incompetent.

Jason listened to him and gave him some advise.

“D’you reckon Jules is still with Howard then?” Mark asked after Jason had stood up to finally go to bed too.

“What? She’s still in his room?”

“I never heard her leave, did you?”

“The bastard,” Jason said softly “he really needn’t treat women like this it’s wrong.”

***

Howard knew what he was doing was wrong. He knew that if he’d told Julia the truth that she wouldn’t have slept with him. He knew that if he told her the truth now, she’d kill him. He knew he was in trouble either way. He’d gotten away with this a thousand times, but every time he did feel like shit and a bastard and he knew that Jason and Mark would tell him off tomorrow morning. Honestly, he did care, he just couldn’t help himself.
