Chapter 43- The Cavalry
Chris Scott was face to face with his brother’s nurse, demanding that she call the doctor. “I need some answers,” he said, “My brother isn’t waking up and no one is telling me what’s going on.”
“Young man,” she started…
”And don’t young man me, I’m not some child you can just brush aside, and I’m not some stranger, this is my brother we’re talking about, something is wrong here and you’re not telling we what it is, and that’s not gonna fly.” “If you can’t give me the answers then you get his doctor down here, you get him down here now, cause somebody is gonna tell me something if I have to go to the Chief of Staff or your hospital administrator to make it happen, got it?”
“Young man you’re going to have to calm down, otherwise I’m going to have to call security.”
“Security?” “Security?” “You think I give a rat’s ass about Security?” “Here” he said picking up the phone at his brother’s bedside, “Call ‘em, if you think they can get me out of here go for it!”
Nurse David’s face softened with compassion, “Look, son I know what you’re going through, I see it every day down here, I know you want to know what’s happening and seeing your brother like this is frightening, I know that, but I really don’t have anything else I can tell you and Dr. Millieux is in surgery right now.”
“Then where is your Chief of Staff’s office?” “If the doctor isn’t available then I’ll speak to him, where is he?”
“The Chief isn’t on duty tonight, I know this is difficult, but try to be patient, Dr. Millieux will be out of surgery soon and as soon as he’s finished I’ll tell him you want to speak to him, ok?”
Chris was adamant, he was not going to be put off again, “No, it’s not ok, I want to speak to someone now!” “If your Chief isn’t on duty then get him on the phone, or point me in the direction of the hospital administrator, cause somebody here knows something and they’re gonna tell me now, not tomorrow, not later, not when it’s convenient for them, but now!”
“Okay I’ve tried to reason with you but I can see I’m going to have to call someone.”
As she took the phone from his hand Chris folded his arms across his chest and stood stone-faced. The Security guard arrived within a minute; eyeing Chris up and down as the nurse explained that she wanted him removed from the hospital. The guard held his hand out and motioned for Chris to come with him.
“I’m not going anywhere until I speak to someone in authority about my brother.”
The officer moved forward and grabbed Chris by the arm saying, “Don’t make me have to hurt you son, come on let’s go.”
Chris jerked his arm away backing up into the sliding bed table, knocking the plastic water pitcher to the floor as he did. The officer grabbed him a second time, raising his voice saying, “Let’s go!” Chris was just about to speak when he heard from the doorway,
“Hey!” “Get off of him!” It was Vin and Ric, and they were moving forward into the room with a vengeance.
“I said, get your hands off him,” Vin yelled grabbing the security guard by the hand taking his thumb and bending it backwards prying Chris loose from his grip. Chris brushed past the guard and rushed into his sister’s arms, “Raven!”
Nurse David finally spoke, trying to regain control of the situation. “You folks are going to have to leave…” before she could finish her sentence Ric finished it for her. “We’re his family, and we’re not going anywhere.”
“Sir” she began, and he cut her off again,
“That’s Doctor…Doctor Andrews, Eric Andrews” he smiled as he whipped out his credentials, “and as I said…we’re not going anywhere….now, where’s the attending physician?”
