Chapter 43

Stepping out of the airline terminal she turned on her phone to check her messages and died when she found she had 16.
She heaved a sigh and waded through them. Most of them were from Jordan. At least she knew that he was going through the same torment that she was. The last one shocked her.
"Kristy this is Jeff, Jeff Timmons, I know we have met several times but I just heard what happened between you and well never mind about that, I just though we could talk about something" he was rambling as if he didn't quite know how to ask the question he needed to "its business not personal, but any way please call me back" and he left his number.
Curiosity got the best of her as she stood looking at her dust covered car. It had been in the extend lot at the airport now for what, almost 3 weeks. She opened the door and it seemed to crack like the entrance to a tomb. She sat down in the drivers seat and decided to post pone her trip home for a few more minutes and give Jeff a call back. His message was very curious.
The phone rang three times before he picked up.
"Hey Jeff this is Kristy" she said cheerly
"Oh hey girl, whats up" he said trying to make small talk
"Just got back into town and got your message" she said eager to find out what he wanted.
"Listen, I know what happened and I am sorry" he said his tone changing
"hey, don't worry about it, not your problem" she said dismissively but she could feel the lump in her throat rising.
"well, let me just get down to the point" he said trying to cover his uneasiness
"ok, shoot" she said thankfully
"I know you from your work with Jordan and I just want to say first off that I am no longer with his management" he said sternly as if to seperate him self from an evil intatity. "I left because as Jordan career began to take off mine seemed well, I guess the best way to put it is not as important" he finished
"well that's Chad for you" she said with a laugh
He didn't comment only pressed on.
"I am trying to do this myself and I will admit that I am having a rough time" he said finally comming to his proposition
"Oh I am sorry to hear that" she said sympathetically.
"well that is where my question comes in," he paused as if expecting her to stop him. When she didn't he continued on. "I was wondering if you would use your talents for my career?" he finished in an anxious rush.
She looked around the car not really believe what she was hearing. She didn't know shit about the music industry. She had just done promotions for Jordan and that was nothing. Why would he think she was actually capable of helping and managing his career? She couldn't except his offer, that would just be suicide for his future.
"Listen" she finally said. "I really don't know anything about that stuff and I personally think that, while I am so flattered that you thought of me, I would completely ruin any chance that you may have" she finished
"Look I have been in this business a while and you are the best sales person I have seen, you could sell ice to eskimos" he finished with a nervous tone "Please at least consider it" he finished with a slight beg in his voice.
"well, I just don't want to ruin your career" she said
"Career? I haven't got much of one at the moment" he said with a bitter laugh
"Jeff you are a good song writer, a hot performer and you have the best personality. When people meet you they love you!" she said in an encouraging tone
"see what I mean," Jeff began excitedly "you are trying to sell me to myself! You are so great!" He finished with a laugh
"Ok so maybe I should consider it" she said thinking about the fact that she no longer had a job
There was a long pause before he spoke "You mean you will, I mean you will think about it at least" he said excitedly
"Yeah, ok, I guess I can go where I have never gone before" she said brightly "Draw up a plan and a contract and I will take a look at it and we will settle on something" she finished as she turned the car on
"What do you mean?" Jeff said in a confused tone
"get your attorney to draw up a contract for salary and all of that stuff and then you make up a job description for me, I will go over all of it and see if I think I can do the job" she finished as she gestured around to no one
"oh ok, so when do you want to get together?" he asked sounding impatient
"slow down," she laughed "I have some things to get in order here and I will give you a call next week" she said
"A week!" he said surprised
"Yeah, its well...."she paused as the lump rose again "personal stuff" she croaked out
"oh sorry, I guess I shouldn't push you" he paused his voice going soft "I will call you next week if I haven't heard from you ok" he said trying to sound light
"Ok, take care" she finished as she hung up
She paused taking a deep breath. Everything that had happened over the past few weeks seemed to be building under the surface and she didn't know how she was going to continue to keep it back. She sighed again and pulled out of the lot.
Driving home it all seemed foreign to her. For the first time ever she was not looking forward to going home, who was she kidding this part of her life was over. She needed to close this chapter and just move on.
She pulled up in the drive way to a house that she for all intent and purposes no longer called home. She didn't know how this was going to work and was relieved when Michael's truck wasn't in the drive way. They had done well with pretending the past month or so when she was around, but now, she sighed, it just wasn't in her to play around.
She went in and noticed that everything was clean and tidy just as she had expected it to be. She went to the bedroom and unpacked her suit case and placed her stuff in the bathroom. She made notice of the extra tooth brush in his cup and grimaced. She knew that she could never even make a fuss about cheating but in their own house. She wasn't even that low. The fact that she didn't immediately take it out and scrub the toilet with it and replace it was a great indication of how done she was with the situation. She showered the trip off of her and changed into comfortable PJ's. She was making herself a cup of tea when she heard the truck pull up.
Michael walked in and noticablely avoided her eyes.
"Hey there" she said brightly. Man she was a good actress, maybe she should consider a career move.
"hey, I see you got back alright, how are the girls?" he asked as he took off his work gear. It was good to see he had acting skills as well. She immediately had the feeling of being in a rehearsed soap opera on daytime television.
"Good, the enjoyed having me all to themselves for a change" she returned actually proud of herself for keeping the conversation going so well
"and jordan?" he asked tentatively
Ice went through her veins and she felt her stomach drop. "Um well....he's okay....I guess" she said looking down
"what is it?" he asked with concern. After everything he could still read her like a book
"well we had a huge fight and I um well I kind of quit" she forced out
"really? quit? what are you going to do now then" he asked as he sat down across from her.
"well...I really didn't know until I got back and got a message from Jeff" she said not being able to hide her excitement
"Jeff?" Michael asked and he actually seemed intrested
"Yeah he was under the same management and did a breif tour with Jordan before he took off" Kristy said business like
"and he called you" Michael asked totally confused
"Oh yeah sorry, he broke with the management and is trying to do this on his own and he asked for my help" she said brightly
"so you going to take it?" he asked reproachfully
"don't know, I don't know if I can do all of it myself, I really don't know much about the business" she said with a shrug
"I am sure you can handle it" he said getting up and kissing her on the forehead as he walked by
After that they conviently avoided each other the rest of the night. She was glad not to have to think about the struggle between them. She had just started to wonder how they were going to sleep when he appeared in the doorway of her office.
"Listen, I don't want to be an ass but we need to talk about this" he said holding up an offical looking envelope
"Ok" she said getting up. She knew what those were and to her surprise she felt her heart ache at what they meant.
