Chapter 46

The Friday after Thanksgiving - evening

*********************

David had left James to get acquainted with Beth while he helped his mother lay the table for dinner. He’d only been gone about ten minutes but he was anxious to get back to rescue James. By now, likely as not he was on his own with her. Bo had probably gone to give Jon a hand with the children and Dad was busy with something in the den.

“You mean you’re in David’s show too?” Beth was asking when he returned to the kitchen. “Why doesn’t anyone tell me these things?”

“Better not let anyone else hear you call it my show,” David chuckled.

“Well, you know what I mean. You know me, David. I always have trouble remembering titles. So, James, what role do you play? Another bad ass vampire?”

“Er… yes.”

Beth laughed.

“Really?” she asked in obvious surprise. “I kinda thought one would be enough.”

“Angel has a soul. Spike - James’ character - doesn’t,” David explained.

“And that means?” Beth asked, waiting for the explanation to continue.

“It means he plays a good guy whereas I’m bad through and through,” James added.

“Except for being devoted to Drusilla,” David said. “That’s kinda sweet.”

“Drusilla?” Beth said.

“Another vampire,” David said. “Spike’s girlfriend. She was sired by Angelus. They both were.”

“Oh! I see,” Beth said.

James frd.
d.

“You do?” David exclaimed.

“Yeah, it’s the classic eternal triangle,” Beth continued.

“It is?” David said.

“Spike loves Drusilla. Drusilla loves Angel…”

“Angelus,” David corrected.

“Whatever… The real question is, who does Angelus love?”

“Er… Darla?” James suggested.

“She’s the one who made Angelus, right?”

They both nodded.

“Then she probably loves Angelus but that doesn’t mean he loves her. Anyhow, I thought you told me Darla was dusted - is that what you call it - in season one?”

David exchanged a glance with James. Could Beth be right? What was Joss up to…?

“Do you think Beth was right about Angelus having a thing for Spike, back in the day?” James asked.

They’d gone upstairs to change for dinner, not that he had anything much to change into.

“Could be,” David said. “Not sure though why they’d wanna bring that up now it’s been established Angel is in love with Buffy. I wouldn’t pay any attention to Beth. She always thinks she knows better than everyone else.”

“Could be laying the groundwork for a plot development next season,” James suggested. “Muddying the waters for Angel and Buffy perhaps. Who knows? Course, I’ve no idea yet if I’m gonna be around. Have they said any more to you about your contract?”

“Nothing definite but Joss seemed pretty confident we’re gonna get renewed. Or, rather, the show is.”

“Why the distinction?”

“They’re killing me off at the end of the season. Joss told me just before I left to fly up here. It’s meant to be top secret. We’re heading for another apocalypse. You help Buffy to stop me sucking the world into Hell and then she kills me.”

James sat down on the edge of the bed. He was shocked. It looked like they’d both be out of work come the summer.

“Shit!” he exclaimed. “Er… did you say, I help Buffy?”

David nodded.

“Believe it or not, yes. Something to do with Drusilla. Angel’s death isn’t permanent, though. Hell spits him out again. I guess it’s all about the soul. Apparently, I come back naked.”

“Oh, that’ s gonna be a popular episode,” James said with a grin.

“You think?”

James stood up again and moved to stand in front of David, wrapping his arms around David’s neck.

“I know. After all, I speak from a position of experience,” James said, pulling David into a kiss.

It was a short kiss.

“Whoa, down boy!” James said as he felt David grab his hips bringing their bodies into close contact. “That’ll have to wait. We’re supposed to be getting changed.”

David reluctantly let him go.

“I think everyone’s getting changed for dinner except me. This is all I have - jeans and t-shirt. At least it’s a clean t-shirt thanks to Bo…”

“Oh, I’m sorry, Sweetheart. I took your laundry down to the cellar but Dad distracted me before I could load the machine.”

“’S okay, Luv, provided you don’t mind me wearing this. Is it okay?”

“Bo leant you a t-shirt?”

“Yeah. She’s the only one whose clothes stand any chance of fitting me. Yours certainly don’t. It’s a choice between three sizes too big or one size too small.”

“I thought it was a bit tight. The colour is good on you though.”

“You don’t think it makes me look like a refugee from Star Trek?”

David frowned.

“Mr Spock wore this colour.”

“Oh. No, it’s fine, really. Matches your eyes.”

“Davy, I’m sorry. I’m going to let you down, aren’t I? I should have brought a tux.”

“Oh, Baby, you could never let me down. It doesn’t matter what you wear. Jon’s the only one likely to wear a tux. Dad’ll be wearing cords and a sweater like he always does. Mom might wear a dress but I doubt Bo will and I’m not sure Beth even owns a dress.”

“Come on, we’ll go as we are,” David said. “No one’s gonna mind.”
