Chapter 5

Jordan sprinted across the runway to the waiting plane. Every bone is his body seemed to be aching from the lack of sleep and he had tonight to do it all again he thought with mock enthusiam. When they got seated and buckled in Chad gave him an odd look. "Man you look like shit, didn't you sleep?"
Bubba had to cover his mouth to stifle the laughter.
"No sorry didn't get much last night, I.....was......um......well.....a little busy" he finished looking over at Bubba with a grin.
"Ok what happened?" Chad said looking between the two of them in utter confusion
When Jordan just continued to smile, Chad looked over at Bubba hoping he would supply the answer without further question.
"Kristy got locked out of her room last night and it took a while to get her back in" Bubba answered through stifled giggles.
"Kristy?" Chad said starting to get annoyed.
"You know the tall brunette that I introduced you to at the meet and greet" Jordan said with a gesture.
"Oh yeah the married one" Chad said with an accusatory glare.
A flash of guilt ripped through Jordan as he remembered his own wife.
"Yeah her" Jordan admitted guiltily
"Damn man, do I have to babysit you every waking minute" Chad said slamming his fist down on the arm rest.
"Your not my babysitter" Jordan snapped out angrily "and it wasn't like that at all" he turned his head to look out the window "she is different"
"man I have heard that one before" Chad said almost to himself
"Not fucking from me you havent" Jordan said angrily "So don't even go there with me"
Chad opened his mouth but Bubba cut him off.
"Chill out guys" Bubba said not even bothering to look at them. Sometimes he felt like the babysitter. He leaned back as the plane took off, closed his heavy eyes and wondered if she would call.
When nothing else was said, Jordan slipped on his head phones to listen to some tracks they had started in the studio last week. He closed his eyes and before he knew it he was asleep.
"Hey" Chad said as he shook Jordan by the shoulders
"what?" Jordan gasped as he snapped out of an almost dead sleep.
"what the hell were you dreaming?" Chad sniggered "You were moving around and moaning the entire time"
"What are you watching me sleep now?" Jordan said embarrassingly
Chad just laughed as the plane touched down.
As the plane taxied to its gate, Jordan leaned over and sighed heavily into his hands. "what the hell time is it now" he said with frustration
"11:00 am east coast time, that makes it 10:00 here" Chad said resetting his watch.
"at least with the time zones I get more sleep" Jordan said to the inside of his hands.
They exited the plane and trudged through the crowded airport to collect their bags. Jordan was silent as he watched the buildings slide by from the car window. His eye lids felt like lead weights but his heart felt even heavier. The distance was so much harder than he had ever thought it would be. Sleeping on the plane he had dreamed about her, them being together. The guilt weighed on him like something he had never experienced before. He closed closed his eyes and saw her face, that flirty smile with her head at an angle that made him loose his mind. He felt himself smile in response. His hand automatically massaged his pocket and he felt comfort wash through him as he touched the small silver K he had theived.

After wrestling with her pillow for an hour, Kristy gave up and finally decided she might as well head home. She was not looking forward to the five hour drive on less than three hours sleep but her concious wasn't cooperating. When she finally looked in the mirror she was absolutely horrified. Jordan must be out of his mind for wanting to kiss her with her looking like this. It looked like she had two black eyes from the bags under them. Deciding she would feel better after a hot shower, she undressed and walked into the stark white bath. When the steam began to fill the room, she stepped under the hot spray and felt her muscles instantly relax. She reflexively closed her eyes and just let the hot water pour over her, she didn't know what ached more, her body or her heart. No matter how hard she tried she just couldn't get the image of him out of her mind. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the look on his face as he lay there sleeping. Her mind jumped to the moments that happened before and she felt her insides flush. She pushed that thought away, she couldn't keep thinking about that and move on with her life. What a complete idiot, she thought as she pressed her burning forehead to the blessedly cool tiles. The tears began again. She was so racked by sobs that she finally had to just sit down in the tub and she started rocking herself for comfort. She had to stop this, just had to. She had to accept what she had done and move on. She was an adult despite last nights events and she would just have to endure what mental anguish they came with. She felt like screaming in frustration, so she did. Feeling much better after the crying and screaming had ended she brushed her wet, dripping hair out of her face and got up. With a deep sigh of renewed conviction she rinsed herself off and got out. When she looked in the mirror she had to admit she did look a little better. She glanced down at the white towel around her and she just had to laugh to herself. Jordan in a towel. She shook her head, well at least she could share that exciting development with the girls. She finished getting ready and threw everything into her suitcase uncerimonously. After checking out, she got in her car and drove back to reality.
After stoping for gas and a quick breakfast Kristy started the long journey home.
Turning on the radio because she couldn't bare to hear her CD's at the moment she found a station playing 80's music and turned it up loud. With the windows rolled down and the cool mountian air blowing through she jammed along to all the music she loved when she was a child. After several songs went by she was feeling surprisingly energized and light hearted when it all shattered. The first few notes of the song sent chills up her spine. She reached up her hand instinctively to turn it off but then found herself listening hypnotically. I'll Be Loving You Forever poured out of her radio and she finally gave into the tears. At this point she didn't know if she could ever really listen to his music the same way again. After the song finished she turned off the radio and opted for one of her numerous books on tape to occupy her driving time. No surprises there she thought as she popped in the tape. The voice of the reader soothed her as she lost herself in someone elses twisted reality. After two hours pasted she was back in her home state again and starting to get anxious about getting home. She didn't think she would ever get there. A few minutes later her cell phone rang causing her to jump as she smacked off the tape player. She quickly checked the caller ID before she answered it. Michael she said out loud with a heavy sigh.
"Hey sweetie how are you" she said in a syrupy loving voice
"Good just about to head out for work and I was wondering if you had started home yet" he said sleeply
"Yeah I am about three hours away" she replied
"Ok good, call me when you get here, I might not answer because we have a search warrent planned but I want to know when you get home" he said hurriedly
"Ok, no problem, is that why you are up and going to work so early?" she said
"Yeah, and I won't be home until late tonight we have several things going, if we actually get the chance to do them" he finished with a tired breath
"Ok, I will probably be on line anyway, giving all the details" she said with a laugh
"Oh yeah how did that go?" he asked with out any real interest
Ice went through her vains and she had to take a breath to steady herself before she spoke
"Fine, it was weird though because it was a mixer, but we had a good time" she finally managed to say without her voice shaking.
"Good, well you becareful and don't forget to call me" he finished
"I will, I promise" she said as she wondered how many more promises of calls she could make today
"Love you" he said with out emotion
"Love you too" she said and broke the connection.
She had to light a cigarette after that one. The whole situation had caused her to pick her on her habit when she was really trying to cut back. Gone now were the days of a stress free life and mind. It took her a minute to compose herself and then she started the book again.
Before she knew it she was home. As she drove up she checked her watch. 1:00pm she had exactly 3 hours before the girls would be on line wanting to know every last detail of her night. She walked inside threw her bag on the couch and fell face first in her bed. Thankfully a dreamless sleep washed over her. The alarm of her phone buzzing in her hand woke her with a shock. She knew she didn't get service out here but had forgotten she had set it as a reminder to get on line at the right time. She went into the bathroom and ran cold water over her face. She decided that she was looking considerably better after the nap and the brusing under her eyes had receeded into ghosts of purple.
After grabbing a Coke, no more Dr. Pepper for her thank you, she went into her office and logged onto the internet. While the computer was booting she decided to check her messages on her cell phone, curious to see if anyone had called her.
"You have 4 new messages" said the robotic lady from the cell service
Four? she though curiously and pressed the number to hear them.
"Kristy this is Bubba, I am not going to be pissed that you didn't call yet, but I would love to hear that you are ok, heres my number again."
She laughed to herself, so he really did want to hear from her then.
"Kristy, where the hell are you? Bubba said that you didn't call him back and that was an hour ago, we are worried please call, my number is..."
She pulled her head away from the phone to study it when she heard Jordan's voice. He had really called, she couldn't believe it. She had a feeling in her gut that it was a bad sign but she couldn't help but be excited.
"hey sweetie, I figured you were sleeping, call me when you get up"
Michael the asshole. The bastard knew I was home and didn't even bother to call the house. Why do I even bother
"Kristy, Its me again. I am starting to feel like a stalker. Please call when you get a chance I am worried.
Jordan again. Man, what was going on? She had all but decided that he really didn't care about her, so what did this mean? Confusion spread through her and she almost dialed his number, then she thought better of it. I shouldn't encourage this. I will call Bubba to let them know I am all right and then I will let it go at that.
She got the number out of her cell contact list and dailed it on the house phone.
"Kristy, my god I thought you would never call" Bubba said with out even a hello
"Sorry, I got home and passed out immediately, didn't talk to anyone" she said apologetically
"Jordan is going nuts that we haven't heard from you" Bubba said with concern
"Wait a minute," Kristy said stopping him in confusion "How did you know it was me? I called from my house phone not my cell" she said in an accusing tone.
He laughed "Simple deduction my lady, your cell area code is 843 and when I saw the 843, I just figured it was you"
"What doesn't Jordan have any other side pieces from my area" she said with a small laugh
"No, you are his only South Carolina girl" Bubba said in amusement
"Good thing to know" she said trying to hide her jealousy at his non denial of the side piece comment, I guess she had to be one of so many "Why was Jordan upset at not hearing from me?" she said trying to play her new annoyance off
"He was just concerned" Bubba said
"well let him know that I am here and I am prefectly fine" she said diplomatically
"I would let you tell him yourself but he is in a radio interview at the moment"
"Oh well, thats alright, just tell him I am fine and good luck tonight" she said in that tone everyone takes when they are about to say goodbye.
"Ok well, you be good" Bubba said as the noise grew in the back ground
"I will..." she paused "Bubba, take care of him will ya" she said in a rush
"Don't worry, sweetheart he's paying me to" he said with a deep chuckle as he hung up.
She sighed and sat there looking at the phone for a moment, almost hoping it would ring, then she began answering the barrage of questions that were being fired at her from an ocean away.
