Chapter Five

Rob ran around the room making sure everything was perfect. He lit the candles on the table, pressed play on the CD player and turned off the main lights. His office was bathed in a soft glow.

"Perfect." He announced. He walked out of his office and yelled. "Lex! Can you come here? I need you."

"Be right there." She called back. He fidgeted around waiting for her, recounting the past year. After a successful US tour he had returned home and relaxed for a short while and then he was off to Europe for a tour there as well. Lex got time off when her show went on hiatus and she was able to come and join him. When they got back home, he had rested and she had gone back to her show.

They day they announced she was nominated for an Emmy, they had jumped around, laughing and crying. She hadn't won but her show did win Best New Comedy and she received accolades for that. And they were happy, joyously happy, she still pulled the odd prank on him. He laughed when he thought about coming home to take a bath and finding it full of oatmeal. He loved her more than anything and tonight he was going to ask her to marry him.

She walked into the den and smiled.

"Are you trying to get me to repeat what happened during that thunderstorm?" She asked, playing with the zipper on her sweater. He was tempted to let her do that but decided to wait untill after they became engaged. He had no doubt she would say yes.

"Yes...but give me a moment first. We need to talk." He said feeling nervous all of a sudden.

"About what?" She asked him, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing the side of his mouth. He took her hands off of his neck.

"I want to do this proper. So we can tell everyone how it was." He said, digging into his pocket. Lex finally realised what he was going on about, he was going to propose. She covered her mouth with her hand and stared at him with a mixture of disbelief, terror and overwhelming delight.

"Oh my God, Rob...?" She whispered. He looked up and gave her a reassuring smile and then pulled out a little blue box and got down on one knee.

"Lex...will you marry me?"

"Yes!" She said before he even finished. He jumped up and took her hand and put the ring on her finger. It was a huge diamond.

"Don't worry, I made sure it didnt come from a country where they enslave people to mine for diamonds." He told her while she looked at it.

"You are the best." She said kissing his lips.

"I love you and I will never let you go." He told her.

"Rob, I'll be there in about half an hour. I have to stop and get my dress from the cleaners." Lex said to him as she drove along the highway.

"Okay Lex, but hurry up. Everyone is here and they are getting hungry."

"Well they cant start the engagement party without the bride." Lex teased.

"I could always find a replacement." He joked back.

"You wouldnt dare. I am irreplacable." She said with a laugh.

"You're right, I love you so much." He said. Not caring that Jon was listening to his conversation.

"I love you so much too....OH MY GOD!" Came her scream. Rob heard a loud crashing noise and then the sound of Lex crying.

"Lexi!? What happened? Jon I think Lex has been in a car accident!" Rob said in full panic when she didnt answer him. Jon, jumped forward and put his ear beside Rob's listening.

"Lexi, answer me. Can you hear me?" Rob asked, he could hear people talking in the back ground.

"Is she okay?"

"Lady can you hear me?"

"Stay still, help is on it's way."

"Lex! Please, someone!" Rob shouted into the phone. No one heard him because they didn't pick up her phone.

"Fuck Jon, I have to go to her." Rob said walking towards the door to go outside.

"Rob, where do you think it happened?" Jon asked.

"I dont know she had to be close to the drycleaners. Maybe we should just go to the hospital." Rob said, unsure of what to do. He just knew he had to get to Lex.

"Why don't we drive to the hospital and take the route you think Lex would have been on." Jon said. Rob agreed and they got into Jon's rental. Rob was nervous, he still had his cell phone and could hear people talking to Lex.

"Over here. This woman needs help." He heard someone call out.

"The ambulance must be there." Rob told Jon. He could hear the sound of metal grating and knew they were trying to get to her.

"It's okay miss, it's going to be alright." He heard a man say and then Lex made a whimpering sound.

"Hello?" Someone came on Lex's cell phone then.

"Hello, how is Lex. Where is she?" Rob asked desperately.

"They are just loading her into the abulance. She is going to Mercy."

"How...how is she?" Rob asked fearfully.
"I don't know. She's not awake."

"Oh. Thank you." Rob said to the man.

At the hospital, Jon let Rob out and then went to park. Rob ran into the emrgency area and asked the receptionist.

"Alexandra Wilkes. She was just brought here from a car accident. I need to know how she is." Rob said breathlessly.

"Are you family?" the nurse asked.

"Fiance." Rob told her.

"Have a seat and I will see what I can find out."

"Thank you." Rob said sitting down.

"You're the man I talked to on the phone." A tall police man said approaching him.

'On Lex's cell? Yes. That was you?"

"Yes. You were talking to her at the time?" The cop asked flipping his notebook open and began to write into it.

Rob was sitting staring at the floor. He knew he should go up and look at her but he just couldn't bear to go. He had watched the parade of shoes, go by, standing up and shaking hands when someone talked to him. Mostly they left him alone, uncomfortable to be near him. Unsure of what to say. He didn't even want to be around himself. What do you say to a man who's fiance died? No one knew and though they tried to be caring and sympathetic, he usually just gave them a glazed over look. The papers were filled with stories about how he had broke down in the hospital, witnesses reported he had tried to break through the secrurty guards to get to Lex. And when he finally accepted she was gone, he had lain on the floor and cried. She was gone. Nothing would fill the hole in his heart. Lexi was dead.

"Rob." He heard his mum say. He looked at her expensive designer shoes and her black panty hose. But he didnt look up into her eyes.

"Robert. They are going to close the casket. This is your last chance." She said laying a hand on his shoulder. He nodded and stood up, not walking towards the casket.

"Do you want me to come too?" His mum asked.

'Mum, I am so afraid. I don't want to look. If I look it will mean she is gone. That I will never see her again. Don't make me look.' He thought. But he didn't speak those words. He slowly turned towards her, in her shiny black coffin. The place where she would spend eternity in. Slowly turning to dust. He hear the hushed whispering stop and felt everyone's eyes on him as he made the journey for a last look at Lex. He could see her profile, her soft brown hair laid out around her, hands clasped holding her rosary. He stopped before he got there and heard the whispering start back up, probably hoping he would have some sort of dramatic breakdown. He wasn't quite sure whether he was going to prove them wrong. Somehow he managed to make his feet begin to move again and found himself beside her. Her mother had brought a dress for her, it was white and made him think that she would have been his bride. Should have been his bride. Her face looked peaceful, like she was asleep no sign of the trauma she had suffered. He knew that inside her body her heart was broken, that's what had killed her. Damaged beyond medical help. And now his heart was broken, and there was no help for his damaged heart either. He stared at her and had flashes of her when she was alive. And that;s what broke him, the memory of her laying on the couch with cookies on her face, his Lex was gone and she would never come back.

"Lexi, I love you and will never forget you" He finally maged to choke out. He reached in his pocket and pulled out her engagement ring and slipped it on her finger.

"You are my wife Lex. I'll see you in Heaven." He stepped back as they funeral people stepped forward and closed the coffin, shutting Lexi away forever.
