Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I said nothing but felt his gaze upon my hands. I quickly pulled down the sleeves of my sweater over my hands so he wouldn’t see the scars.
“ I can’t Alan, I’m sorry.”
“ You don’t have to apologize to me, but I can see that something scared the living daylight out of you, I saw that the first moment I met you. I thought you where shy. But you’re just scared. What is it that you’re so scared of? Is it me?”
I smirked, he really had no idea how close I was to telling him everything. Alan really was the last person on earth that I was scared of. He was so…grown up, so mature, such a man. As he sat there across me, slowly drinking his tea, it shocked me how much trust I felt towards him. I didn’t even know him. But I wanted him to wrap his arms around me, and hold me. But I also decided I wasn’t going to place this burden on him. He surely hadn’t come to work in France and hear some sad story of a stupid girl. It was too deep. I couldn’t tell him.
“ I don’t want to talk about it, but it’s not you.”
He nodded understandingly. “ Ok, but if you ever want to talk…. I believe I’m not that far away.” He pointed his head in the direction of his balcony. I smiled. “And,” he continued, “next time I take a walk this early I will ask you to join me, so I won’t scare you, or your dog.” Toby seemed to be in a comatose sleep beside my chair snoring loudly.
“Thanks, Alan but you really don’t have to…..”
“ No, I know I don’t have to, but I want to, I am staying here for 10 months with only people from the movie business, I could use a little friendship outside of that.”
The phone rang and I picked it up and in rapid French I told the person on the other line that I was currently not to be disturbed.
“ And I need someone to teach me French like that, it sounds like the language of heaven.”
I nearly turned scarlet again, but boldly I heard myself say: “ Well, I have the first word for you then, merci.”
“ Isn’t that thank you?”
“ Yes it is.”
“ You’re welcome Kate.” I felt his hand under my chin as he pulled my face up. “ Whatever has happened to you, I’m sure you are stronger!”
I tried to smile but his sweet words nearly brought me to tears again. His hand on my face seemed to burn in my skin. I closed my eyes and before I knew it I started whispering;
“ I feel so safe when you’re near me.” I could have hit myself. What was I doing? That was a thought!
I opened my eyes for sure I just scared him away. He removed his hand but still looked at me. I looked back. A sort of lightning struck between us and the distance that usually exists between two strangers vanished like snow in the sun. Everything around me seemed to have disappeared and as I felt him leaning forward I couldn’t believe that this was happening. I wanted to speak but he pressed a finger to my lips.
“Don’t speak now, Kate, I don’t know what’s happing either. But I want it to happen. Do you want it to?”
Well yes screamed the inside of my head, but I couldn’t answer this was too strange. As an answer I just closed my eyes, hoping I was not dreaming this.
I could feel him getting closer, I could smell him, I felt his breath on my face, one hand on my face again, lips so close I could nearly feel them.
As his lips touched mine, all tension seemed to glide of my back. He just lightly touched them but the sensation was overwhelming. I got caught in it and pressed my lips against his. And just as his tip of his tongue found mine he pulled back.
His voice was hoarse, his eyes full of sadness…
“ I can’t do this Kate, I am so sorry… I just wanted…make you feel… I’m sorry”
And with that he left my room leaving me astonished and with burning lips on my balcony.
